James Marion Harris is not my husband's direct ancestor. His youngest brother, Gamewell Calhoun Harris, is Stan's direct ancestor. Gamewell C. Harris was too young to fight in the War of Northern Aggression.
Fleming Matthew Harris (aka, erroneously, Francis Marion Harris or Francis Matthew Harris) was born 2/4/1809 in Union County, SC to Samuel G. Harris and Tryphena Harris. Tryphen Harris was born 12/14/1771 in Chesterfield, VA to Thomas Harris and Sarah "Sally" Lacy and she died 8/23/1855 in Union County, SC. Samuel G. Harris was born About 1772 in VA to James Bailey Harris and Ursula Flournoy and died About 1860 in Union County, SC. Fleming Matthew Harris may have gone by F.M. Harris which gave rise to the wrong name on his gravestone. It was later determined that he was NOT Francis Marion Harris but Fleming Matthew Harris.
Fleming Matthew Harris married his first cousin, Augusta Ann Harris, about 1830 in Union County, SC. August Ann Harris was born 5/23/1813 in SC to Fleming Harris (DOB Abt. 1785 in Chesterfield, VA; DOD Abt. 1850 in Copiah County, MS) and Jane Sharp (DOB Abt. 1788 in Union County, SC; DOD Abt. 1850 in Copiah County, MS). Fleming Harris (1785-1850) was the son of Thomas Harris and Sarah Sally Lacy and was the brother of Tryphena Harris. It's a little complicated. Let's look at it.
Fleming Matthew Harris and Augusta Ann Harris had 11-14 children:
1) Frances Cornelia Harris (DOB 12/29/1831 in Union County, SC; DOD Aft. 1880 in Union County, SC) married William Fraser (aka William Frasier) (DOB Abt. 1845 in SC; DOD ? in ? ).
2) James Marion Harris (DOB 1/18/1834 in Union County, SC; DOD 3/29/1865 in Burgess Mill, Petersburg, VA) married Sarah Ann Bevil (DOB 12/30/1835 in Union County, SC to William A.H. Bevel and Sarah Bentley; DOD 10/27/1889 in Union County, SC).
3) Cicely Ann Catharine Harris (DOB 7/25/1836 in Union County, SC; DOD 6/1882 in Union County, SC) married 1st John Floyd (DOB Abt. 1839 in SC; DOD Aft. 1860 in ? ). Married 2nd
Arthur Lipsey (DOB Abt. 1848 in SC; DOD 2/27/1902 in Union County, SC). They had James A. Lipsey, Bunyon Lipsey, Mary A. Lipsey.
4) Sarah Jane Harris (DOB 3/19/1838 in Union County, SC; DOD Bet. 1840-1850 in Union County, SC).
5) Taylor Ann Harris (DOB 11/18/1840 in Union County, SC; DOD 1/12/1908 in Union County, SC) married William Earle Fowler (DOB Abt. 1832 in SC; DOD 1900 in Cherokee County, SC). They had Frances Marion Fowler, Isabella Fowler, Augusta Ann Fowler, William Wallis Fowler, Nancy "Nannie" Ann Fowler.
6) Eugenia Millie Harris (DOB 12/20/1842 in Union County, SC; DOD 3/20/1924 in Union County, SC) married James Gist Farr (DOB 8/12/1836 in SC; DOD 8/23/1899 in Union County, SC). They had Mary Richard Farr, William B. Farr, Walter "Watt" Thomas Farr, Carrie M. Farr, Doretha Farr, John Anderson Farr, Edward Marvin Farr, Aurie Pearl Farr.
7) Patricia "Tricia" Ann Harris (DOB 12/8/1843 in Union County, SC; DOD Aft. 1860 in Union County, SC) mentally handicapped and never married.
8) William Edward Harris (DOB 12/29/1845 in Union County, SC; DOD 7/30/1864 in Petersburg, Dinwiddie County, VA) mentally handicapped. Married ?
9) Anderson Kennedy "A.K." Harris (DOB 4/26/1848 in Union County, SC; DOD 3/24/1928 in York County, SC) married Sarah "Sallie" Austen (DOB Abt. 1847 in SC; DOD Aft. 1920 in ? ). He had Oliver "Ollie" Ross Harris and William "Willie" Edward Harris. They were twins. They may be the children of A.K. and Sarah Austen. But William "Willie" Edward Harris' SS Application and Claim lists his mother as "Molly Byers". Was A.K. married to a Molly Byers before Sallie Austen? Did she die in childbirth? Or is this a mistake in the records? His death certificate lists no mother and Ollie didn't have a death certificate since he died in 1913. A.K. also had a son with Sarah Ann Bevill named Robert Jackson Harris.
10) Havannah Ann Harris (DOB 9/29/1851 in Union County, SC; DOD 2/16/1911 in Union, Union County, SC) never married.
11) Thomas Harris (DOB Abt. 1852 in Union County, SC; DOD Aft. 1870 in ? ) married ?
12) Gamewell Calhoun Harris (DOB 5/26/1853 in Union County, SC; DOD 10/21/1933 in Union, Union County, SC) married Sarah "Sallie" Clementine Brakefield (aka Sarah "Sallie" Clementine Breakfield) (DOB 4/18/1860 in York County, SC; DOD 3/6/1930 in Union County, SC). They had Edward Boyd Harris, Clara Emma Harris, James Marion Harris, Fannie May Harris, Bernice Lemond Harris, Paul Traywick Harris, Florence Viola Harris, Bessie Harris, Carl Allen Harris, Sr., Wallace Samuel Harris, Sr., Blanche Eugenia Harris.
13) Mary Harris (DOB Abt. 1854 in Union County, SC; DOD ? in ? ) married ?
14) George Harris (DOB Abt. 1855 in Union County, SC; DOD Aft. 1860 in ? ) married ?
I am not sure Thomas, Mary and George Harris are the children of Fleming Matthew Harris and Augusta Ann Harris. In the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Censuses, they are at the bottom of the list of children under Fleming Matthew and Augusta Ann Harris, out of birth order, and there are no relationship notations on the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Censuses. We just know their last names were Harris and they lived within the household. They may be the illegitimate children of their first daughter, Frances Cornelia Harris who never married.

James Marion Harris married Sarah Ann Bevil (aka Sarah Ann Bevill, Sarah Ann Bevel). Sarah Ann Beville was born 12/30/1835 in Union County, SC to William A.H. Bevil and Sarah Bentley. They had 3 children before he was killed in the War of Northern Aggression:
1) Joseph Oscar Harris (DOB 3/11/1859 in Union County, SC; DOD 4/4/1927 in Union County, SC) married 1st Sarah "Sallie" Jane Harris Harris (DOB 10/29/1866 in SC; DOD 4/30/1904 in Union County, SC). They had Edward Washington Harris (Lillie Ann Vaughan), Annie McCain Harris (Wallace Douglas Lawson), Vellie Harris (aka Vallie Harris, Valeria Harris or Valorie Harris) (David Usra Alman or David Usra Allman, Walt Taylor Marsh), and perhaps James Wallace Harris(Nannie Mae Gault), Mahala Harris. He married Abt. 1911 in Union County, SC 2nd Nancy "Nannie" Jane Mitchell (DOB 4/7/1870 in SC to Elias Cornelius Mitchell and Harriet Foster; DOD 8/9/1916 in Union County, SC. They had Ola Permelia Harris (David Usra Alman or David Usra Allman), Ernest Marion "Huck" Harris (Emma J. Batten), Ella Harris (John Thomas Bentley), Bernice Harris, William Jennings Bryan Harris (Lois Gault), Pearl Harris (John Fant Faucett), Joseph Oscar Teague Harris, Jr. (Aurine Eaves and Florence Green), Lula Bell "Babe" Harris(Perno D. Head), Iris Virginia Harris (James "Jack" Clarence Parris).
2) James Riley Harris (DOB Abt. 1861 in Union County, SC; DOD 4/7/1950 in Cherokee County, SC) married Louisa Ann Roberson (aka Louisiana Roberson) (DOB 1/12/1862 in SC; DOD 7/8/1946 in Cherokee County, SC). They had Enzie Jane Harris (Bunyon Lipsy), Annie A. Harris (John Thomas "Tom" McAbee), Marion Boston Harris (Essie Mae Proctor), Henry Hoyle Harris(Ida Elizabeth Poole), Fred Shuford Harris (Chatta Cornelia Freeman), William Roy Harris (Venice "Venie" Crocker), James Lewis Harris, Sr. (Melzie Reynolds).
3) Edna Harris (DOB 6/1863 in Union County, SC; DOD 3/21/1923 in Jonesville, Union County, SC) married John H. Mitchell (DOB 12/1857 in SC; DOD 4/8/1935 in Union County, SC). They had Lorenna Mitchell, Lula Mae Mitchell (Noah C. Turner), Nola Mitchell.
Dr. William Richard Harris was born after James Marion Harris died in 3/29/1865. He was born 12/1865 in Union County, SC and died 5/12/1902 in Waterloo, Laurens County, SC of stroke of paralysis at just 35 yrs old. He married Caroline "Carrie" Wilson Boozer (DOB 4/3/1868 in SC; DOD 11/17/1895 in SC). She died young at the age of 27 yrs old. They had William Wilson Harris (Cornelia Bethea), Lucille Harris (George C. Zeigler). If this is a child of Sarah Ann Bevil Harris, is he possibly the son of James Marion Harris (he was born almost exactly 9 mos after James Marion Harris' death) or was he an illegitimate child of unknown father?
Thornwell Orphanage opened in Clinton, South Carolina on 10/1/1875, to ten children orphaned by the American Civil War. It was founded by Reverend William Plumer Jacobs and named for noted theologian James Henley Thornwell. Dr. Jacobs went on to found Presbyterian College. Thornwell Home for Children, once known as Thornwell Home and School for Children (formerly Thornwell Orphanage), operates 12 residential cottages with 6-8 children per home. Thornwell is still supported by the Presbyterian Church (USA) Synod of the South Atlantic, congregations within the Synod and without, and private donations. Most of the buildings are made of granite or with granite facings and the campus is notably attractive. It is one of the earliest American child-care facilities that used "cottages" rather than dormitories to house children. Cyrus McCormick, the inventor of the reaper, supported Thornwell and there was once a "McCormick Cottage" on the campus. - Wikipedia
James Marion Harris was in the 18th Infantry Regiment. It was assembled during the winter of 1861-1862 with men from Laurens County and other counties in the northwestern part of the state. After serving in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, it was ordered to Virginia. During the war it was assigned to General Evans', Elliott's, and Wallace's Brigade. The 18th fought at Second Manassas, South Mountain, and Sharpsburg, moved to North Carolina, then saw action at Jackson, Mississippi. Returning to South Carolina, it was involved in the operations around Charleston. During the spring of 1864 the unit was sent back to Virginia where it participated in the Petersburg siege north and south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. This regiment lost forty-nine percent of the 230 engaged at Second Manassas and had 3 killed and 39 wounded during the Maryland Campaign. In September, 1863, there were 363 present for duty and at the Petersburg mine explosion, 205 were disabled. It sustained many casualties at Sayler's Creek and surrendered 16 officers and 139 men. The field officers were Colonels James M. Gadberry and William H. Wallace, Lieutenant Colonels W.B. Allison and Ferdinand Scaife, and Major Rolet J. Betsill.

Sons of Confederate Veterans
'The Victory of a Soldier's Death'
Camp 1344 Sons of Confederate Veterans held it's regular monthly meeting at the home of Mike Bolin near Cherokee Creek Church for a barbecue chicken dinner. Guests of honor were a real son and a real daughter of Confederate soldiers. F.W. Strapp, F. Co. 18 CS Inf. R.B. Ramsey, son of W.D. Ramsey, gave an interesting talk on some of the stories his father, the Confederate soldier, told, when he was very young. There were about 40 people present at the meeting. The flags of the Confederacy and the flag of SC were prominently displayed. Because so many of those present were descendants of men who had been blown up by the great mine at Petersburg, the conversation drifted into a discussion of that incident which took place on the morning of 7/30/1864. From official reports it can be found that Elliott's Brigade, Johnson's Division, Anderson's Corps, held the strong point. It was composed of 17th, 18th, 23rd, 22nd, 26th and Holcomb SC Legion. From the casualty reports it would seem that the 18th was commanded by L-C W.B. Allison and the 22nd by Col. W.G. Burt. Two companies of the 18th were organized in what is now Cherokee County, N. of the Pacolet, one of which was "F" Company. "B" Company of the 22nd seems to have been made up largely of North of the Pacolet men as well. "B" Company must have been right over the charge for nearly half the company including it's captain were lost in the explosion. Part of the "F" Company, 18th SC was also buried in the explosion. Among them was Mike Bolin's, host for the meeting, grandfather, Edward Harris; his brother, Marion. While a second brother, Anderson, was covered by the explosion, he was dug out and captured. Bolin is shown in the accompanying picture in a Confederate General Officer's uniform. Anyone who had an ancestor who was involved in the "Battle of the Crater" mentioned above and who left some interesting stories about it is invited to write the stories down and send them to Lt. Col. David Quinn, 106 Carter Heights Drive, Gaffney, SC." Source: The Gaffney Leger, Wednesday, April 19, {page torn}, Page 8A
The United Daughters of the Confederacy put together stories by veterans in "Recollections and Reminiscenses, 1861-1865 Thru WWI", Vol 6, Pg 329, Reminiscences as told by Anderson K. Harris to Mrs. J.W. Mixson
At the last celebration of Memorial Day in Union, SC, I met the bearer of the above name and he told me the following story: "I was behind the breastworks at Petersburg when the explosion of the mine occurred. When I came to myself I was lying on top of a pile of dead men in the crater (Petersburg Crater). I had evidently been left for dead along with the others for there was not a man in sight.
"I was pinned in, and could not move my feet at all, and my gun, or at least a gun, was lying across my neck and left side. After a while a young soldier in blue uniform came in sight; about this time, the gun on my neck began to feel very heavy and I made an effort to free my right arm sufficiently to push the gun off of my shoulders.
"Just then the Yankee raised his gun to fire at me, but almost instantly a big soldier stepped out from under cover and knocked up the young soldier's gun so that he fired into the air. The newcomer reprimanded the first solder for firing at a helpless man -- the boy explained that when he saw me move my hand toward the gun on my shoulder he thought I intended to shoot.
"I thanked the big solder for saving my life and begged him to help me get out of the hole into which I was tightly wedged by the forms of the dead men around me.
"I had nothing left to offer my rescuer but a chew of tobacco, but he seemed to appreciate it. After I got out, I was taken prisoner but requested my captors to allow me to examine the dead carefully to see if I could recognize any of them. Looking closely, I thought the legs of a solder seemed familiar -- the head and body were entirely covered by forms lying jumbled together, but the legs were straight in the air, he evidently having been thrown head foremost into the pit at the time of the explosion. The trousers leg was split, and I verified my suspicions as to the identity of the wearer by seeing the name, or rather the initials, on underclothes of my brother.
"Our mother had made the garments for us and marked them by working our initials in black threads on our 'smalls'. I secured permission to remove and bury my brother -- after which I was again taken into custody, and carried to prison."

According to a story by Boston Harris, grandson of James Marion Harris, one of the older Harris men told him Sarah Ann Bevill Harris had knitted some socks and sent them to Anderson, Edward and James Marion. When The Union Army blew up the unit in Petersburg and Anderson was not killed he saw Edward's feet sticking out and told them that was his brother because he recognized his socks.

He married first Vellie's half sister, Ola Permelia Harris. They had Bernice Lucille Allman, Maggie Evelyn Allman, Joseph Everette "Bootsie" Allman, Meredith Elizabeth Allman. They had Lillian Avenelle Harris, William Douglas Harris, Sr., Ada Elizabeth Harris, James Franklin "Frank" Harris, Everette Leon Harris, Manuel Grady Harris, Rachel Harris, Raymond Curtis Harris, Sara Catherine Harris, Dorothy Harris. James Wallace Harris may, or may not, be Joseph Oscar Harris' biological child as he and his wife separated about this time due to his wife's adultery.
.....E) Mahala Harris (DOB 1898 in Union County, SC; DOD ? in ? ) married ? . In the 1900 U.S. Census, Sarah "Sallie" Ann Harris had a 2 year old child living with her with the relationship as "daughter". She may have died after the 1900 census as I couldn't track her. But, Sarah "Sallie" Ann Harris died in 1904 at 37 years old and Mahala would have been 9. Was she adopted by someone? Who was her father?
In 1889 they separated because Sallie Harris had committed adultery (possibly with her sister’s husband, William Foster Scales). On 7/9/1891, Sallie Harris had a son named James Wallace. The father is unknown but James Wallace claimed his father was Joseph Oscar Harris and he may have been conceived before their estrangement. It is said that when James Wallace Harris was 14 yrs old, he showed up at Joseph Oscar Harris' farm and wanted to work for Joseph Oscar. He lived with Joseph Oscar Harris until J.O. Harris died. In the 1910 Census (see below) Oscar Harris lists James Wallace Harris as his son.
Joseph Oscar Harris met Nancy Jane Mitchell. Nannie Mitchell was born 7/4/1870. She had a daughter named Lilly Ann Vaughn on 12/12/1891. Lillie would marry one of J.O. and Sarah Ann Harris' sons, Edward Wallace Harris! Joseph Oscar Harris' wife, Sarah Harris, didn't die until 4/30/1904 in Union County, SC. They were separated but not divorced. But Joseph Oscar Harris began having children with Nannie Mitchell sometime after her daughter, Lilly, was born. Their first child, Ola, was born in 1893. They lived in separate houses on his farm. He and Nannie had 9 children:

For some reason, Joseph Oscar Harris and Nannie Mitchell didn't marry until 1911 even though Sarah Harris died in 1904. This is not unusual in today's world but was a little scandalous back then and their children were the ones that were hurt by it. This family was complicated but no more than what we are used to today.

The Laurens Advertiser, Laurens, SC, 5/14/1902, Pg 3
Because both parents died young, that left their two children orphans who were sent to live at the Thornwell Orphanage, South Broad Street, Clinton, Laurens County, SC. You find them there in the 1910 U.S. Census. In the 1920 U.S. Census William Wilson Harris is married and his little sister, Lucille, is living with them.Thornwell Orphanage opened in Clinton, South Carolina on 10/1/1875, to ten children orphaned by the American Civil War.
