Our Fifth Day In California

On Thursday, our fifth day, I was still sick. Worse. I knew it was strept throat and cold and I knew I needed antibiotics. My immune system is pretty bad and I get infections very easily from anything. So I knew it meant a trip to the doctor, especially if I wanted to spend time with my family on this trip. I didn't know what to do. Jenny suggested an Urgent Care so we went there but it didn't open until 1:00pm and they suggested we go on their website and put our name on the waiting list. So I used my phone and located an Emergency Room. I felt terrible taking up so much time in the ER with strept throat but I didn't have a choice. They were nice and said I did the right thing and was at the right place. I did have a 2 hour wait but considering how busy they were, I couldn't complain. It could have been all day. I apologized to the doctor for taking him away from real emergencies but he was nice and said I'd done the right thing and he gave me a perscription for penicillin. While I had been waiting in the ER, Stan had gone to get himself some lunch. I really didn't want him in there so he wouldn't pick up something and there wasn't enough chairs in the waiting area, they were so busy. So I told him to just drop me off. After I was released and he picked me up, I suggested we go to Nappa Valley. Peggy had said she wasn't interested. I think she thought we would be just going from one winery to another. We didn't have that kind of time! LOL! But it was very close by so we braved the traffic and went. We stopped in Napa and I got a late lunch at Angeles Riverside Restaurant. Then we drove through the valley. My photos are taken from a the window of our car so they aren't the best but they give us an idea of what it looks like. It's a broad, flat valley surrounded by small mountains. On one side the mountains are a little more bare, the other side, the small mountains are covered with trees like our mountains. There are 4 SMALL towns in the valley but many wineries. Napa is the largest town but it's probably the size or smaller than Gaffney.

As we started out of the valley, we got caught back in the bumper to bumper traffic. While we were in traffic I noticed windmills in the distance that was as far as I could see.

Meanwhile, Jenny took Peggy, Angie and the children to a nearby shopping area that had a great children's park.

We got back to their house just in time to make Brett's t-ball game.

Warm up

He made it all the way around. He slid into 3rd base and scraped his arm up pretty good but he continued to play.

Again, he made it all the way around. So he got 2 home runs.

We went back to Jenny and Kyle's house and had pizza for supper.

Our Sixth Day In California

On Friday, our sixth day in California, Jenny took us to Muir Woods National Park to see the redwoods. It was the nearest redwood park. Brooke is getting ready.

It was a very easy boardwalk to see the woods. It was really nice. It was very crowded so parking was difficult. Peggy didn't think she could make the walk so she stayed in the car. Stan started to walk with us but he was nauseated so he went back to the car. After Jenny, Angie, the children and I made the walk, we went back to the car. We could tell Peggy it was beautiful and an easy walk so Stan took her for a short walk to see it.

Then Jenny took us to the Muir Beach overlook! We just couldn't believe all the beautiful things we were seeing!

The winding and steep road from Muir Woods National Park to the Muir Beach Overlook.

Of course, we got caught in traffic as we got nearer to Jenny's town. The kids were worn out. Brett and Brooke fell asleep first. Great Grandma Peggy sang with Ryan in the backseat before he fell asleep.

On our last full day in California, Jenny took us to San Francisco.

We passed neighborhoods of old houses. Most are multi family housing. Some were very nice.

Gas was very expensive in San Francisco. But it was more all over CA compared to here.

We also went through Chinatown.

She drove us right down to Fisherman's Wharf. We parked (parking cost $40!) and walked to Pier 39. It was very cloudy and gray when we first got to San Francisco but after lunch the sun came out and so did the people. We had lunch at the Wipe Out Bar and Grill.

After lunch, here came the sun.

Sea Lions

There all kinds of people doing things to get money - mimes, dancers, singers, sword swallowers, etc.

I would have loved to have taken a tour on segways.

Our Last Day In California And The Trip Home

Sunday morning we had to get ready to leave. We had breakfast together at a local McDonalds. Jenny and the children went on to church and we headed to the airport. This is always the hardest part for Stan and I... the goodbyes. I tried not to cry but did a little and was very depressed for a few days. But it was worth the trip. Brett didn't want us to leave either. He got a little grumpy. I know Brooke had some idea the fun was over. Jenny was choked up. I just hate thinking their little family is way on the other side of the nation.

This is the last photo I took of them. You can tell Brooke isn't happy. Neither was I, Brookie Cookie.

Death And The Christian

If you have read my Bible study posts, you will know that I believe the only way to be saved and spend eternity in Heaven is through Jesus Christ. There is only one way. I do not believe that all religions lead to salvation. I do not believe all "good" people go to Heaven. There is only one way and that is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, to ask His forgiveness and to trust in His work on the cross to save you.

John 6:47 (Modern King James Version - MKJV) "Truly, truly, I say to you, He who believes on Me has everlasting life."

The word believe means to embrace and cling to. We are first to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, who left the right hand of God to come to earth to save us. He was fully God and fully human, sinless. The only sinless human. He came from the egg of Mary, fully human. The egg was supernaturally fertilized by God, fully divine. Therefore He was fully God and fully human and sinless. He had to be God to do the work that He did. He had to be human to pay the price for our sins. His death on the cross, the blood that He shed, paid the price for our sins, all of them no matter how vile. We were sinners therefore we could not save ourselves. We were born sinners. We had no chance, hell was our destiny. So God sent His Son to save us. He gave us a chance to be forgiven and spend eternity with God in Heaven but we must accept His offer of salvation. He has done all the work. The only thing left for us to do is to repent, ask forgiveness and accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. We must realize that we cannot save ourselves. We must realize our sins are our misery and condemn us. We must believe Jesus is God's Son and He took care of our sins. We must ask His forgiveness for our sins. We must ask the Holy Spirit to come live in our lives to strengthen and train us (asking Jesus into our hearts). We must seek Him and desire Him. He will be found!

Mark 16:15-16 (Contemporary English Version - CEV) Then he told them: Go and preach the good news to everyone in the world. (16) Anyone who believes me and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe me will be condemned.

John 3:13-18 (Bible in Basic English - BBE) And no one has ever gone up to heaven but he who came down from heaven, the Son of man. (14) As the snake was lifted up by Moses in the waste land, even so it is necessary for the Son of man to be lifted up: (15) So that whoever has faith may have in him eternal life. (16) For God had such love for the world that he gave his only Son, so that whoever has faith in him may not come to destruction but have eternal life. (17) God did not send his Son into the world to be judge of the world; he sent him so that the world might have salvation through him. (18) The man who has faith in him does not come up to be judged; but he who has no faith in him has been judged even now, because he has no faith in the name of the only Son of God.

John 6:37-40 (Easy To Read Version - ERV) The Father gives me my people. Every one of them will come to me. I will always accept them. (38) I came down from heaven to do what God wants, not what I want. (39) I must not lose anyone God has given me. But I must raise them up on the last day. This is what the one who sent me wants me to do. (40) Everyone who sees the Son and believes in him has eternal life. I will raise them up on the last day. This is what my Father wants."

Romans 10:9-10 (MKJV) Because if you confess the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved. (10) For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses unto salvation.

2 Corinthians 7:10 (Literal Translation of the Holy Bible - LITV) For the grief according to God works repentance to salvation, not to be regretted. But the grief of the world works death.

Philippians 3:7-14 (CEV) But Christ has shown me that what I once thought was valuable is worthless. (8) Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have given up everything else and count it all as garbage. All I want is Christ (9) and to know that I belong to him. I could not make myself acceptable to God by obeying the Law of Moses. God accepted me simply because of my faith in Christ. (10) All I want is to know Christ and the power that raised him to life. I want to suffer and die as he did, (11) so that somehow I also may be raised to life. (12) I have not yet reached my goal, and I am not perfect. But Christ has taken hold of me. So I keep on running and struggling to take hold of the prize. (13) My friends, I don't feel that I have already arrived. But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for what is ahead. (14) I run toward the goal, so that I can win the prize of being called to heaven. This is the prize that God offers because of what Christ Jesus has done.

John 14:6 (CEV) "I am the way, the truth, and the life!" Jesus answered. "Without me, no one can go to the Father.

Predicated upon our belief in salvation through Jesus Christ and that the Holy Spirit now lives in our hearts. And believing the Bible is the Word of God, our standard of truth, now what happens to us when we die?

What happens when someone dies? What comes after death? The Bible is not silent of mysterious on this subject. Let's look at it, using the Bible as our guide.

Luke 16:19-31 (MKJV) There was a certain rich man who was customarily clothed in purple and fine linen and making merry in luxury every day. (20) And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores (21) and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. But even the dogs came and licked his sores. (22) And it happened that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich one also died and was buried. (23) And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. (24) And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame. (25) But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things. But now he is comforted and you are tormented. (26) And besides all this, there is a great chasm fixed between you and us; so that they desiring to pass from here to you cannot, nor can they pass over to us from there. (27) And he said, I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house, (28) for I have five brothers, so that he may testify to them, lest they also come into this place of torment. (29) Abraham said to him, They have Moses and the Prophets, let them hear them. (30) And he said, No, father Abraham, but if one should go to them from the dead, they would repent. (31) And he said to him, If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded, even though one rose from the dead.

Jesus proclaimed the gospel (good news) of salvation through him. He taught for 3 years until His death on the cross and His resurrection from the grave. We have been sent the Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts and lead us to salvation. We have the Word of God, the Bible. We have no excuses for not knowing how to be saved from hell. If we continue to ignore and reject the message until our dying breath, we cannot hold anyone but ourselves responsible. If we refuse to believe; refuse to hear and accept; if nothing God has done will change our stubborn minds then we will reap the consequences. God doesn't want anyone to suffer hell. He loves us enough to have provided a way out.

Back to our subject, we see from Jesus' own words that once we die, we are sent to a place. It is one of torment for unbelievers and one of bliss for believers. There is a great divide between the two that neither can cross.

Some believe that we go to a place called Hades, the unseen world. Sometimes Hades is interpreted as Hell and others interpreted as the place of the dead. The latter see Hades as an intermediate state between death and resurrection, divided into two parts: one the abode of the blessed and the other the abode of the lost. Hades, in the Old Testament, was also translated as Sheol in some places.

We do know that there are two places for the UNSAVED:  Hades and Hell. One being present and the other being future. Both are places of torment but Hades is for the unsaved until Jesus comes back. The other is for when Jesus comes back, in the final judgment, when the unsaved will be sent with satan and his demons to Hell, also referred to as Gehenna, the Lake of Fire; the permanent place of punishment. This is sometimes referred to in the scriptures as "the second death".

Suffice it to say, I do not want to go to Hades' place of conscious suffering and despair. Nor do I want to end up in Hell, the Lake of Fire, the place of eternal torment.

Matthew 8:11-12 (MKJV) And I say to you that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of Heaven. (12) But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
This scripture refers to many, who are not Jews, will come and join in the kingdom of Heaven but many who are Jews but who refuse to believe Jesus is the Messiah, will be lost. You see, the gospel of salvation was preached to the Jews first. Many accepted Jesus as the Son of God and were saved but most did not. Those who do not, Jewish or Gentile, are not saved. But the emphasis for this study is "cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth".

Matthew 13:24-30 (CEV) Jesus then told them this story: The kingdom of heaven is like what happened when a farmer scattered good seed in a field. (25) But while everyone was sleeping, an enemy came and scattered weed seeds in the field and then left. (26) When the plants came up and began to ripen, the farmer's servants could see the weeds. (27) The servants came and asked, "Sir, didn't you scatter good seed in your field? Where did these weeds come from?" (28) "An enemy did this," he replied. His servants then asked, "Do you want us to go out and pull up the weeds?" (29) "No!" he answered. "You might also pull up the wheat. (30) Leave the weeds alone until harvest time. Then I'll tell my workers to gather the weeds and tie them up and burn them. But I'll have them store the wheat in my barn."

Matthew 13:49-50 (CEV) That's how it will be at the end of time. Angels will come and separate the evil people from the ones who have done right. (50) Then those evil people will be thrown into a flaming furnace, where they will cry and grit their teeth in pain.

Matthew 18:7-9 (CEV) The world is in for trouble because of the way it causes people to sin. There will always be something to cause people to sin, but anyone who does this will be in for trouble. (8) If your hand or foot causes you to sin, chop it off and throw it away! You would be better off to go into life crippled or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the fire that never goes out. (9) If your eye causes you to sin, poke it out and get rid of it. You would be better off to go into life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fires of hell.

Matthew 25:31-33 (CEV) When the Son of Man comes in his glory with all of his angels, he will sit on his royal throne. (32) The people of all nations will be brought before him, and he will separate them, as shepherds separate their sheep from their goats. (33) He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Matthew 25:34-46 (CEV) Then the king will say to those on his right, "My father has blessed you! Come and receive the kingdom that was prepared for you before the world was created. (35) When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat, and when I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. When I was a stranger, you welcomed me, (36) and when I was naked, you gave me clothes to wear. When I was sick, you took care of me, and when I was in jail, you visited me." (37) Then the ones who pleased the Lord will ask, "When did we give you something to eat or drink? (38) When did we welcome you as a stranger or give you clothes to wear (39) or visit you while you were sick or in jail?" The king will answer, "Whenever you did it for any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me." (41) Then the king will say to those on his left, "Get away from me! You are under God's curse. Go into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels! (42) I was hungry, but you did not give me anything to eat, and I was thirsty, but you did not give me anything to drink. (43) I was a stranger, but you did not welcome me, and I was naked, but you did not give me any clothes to wear. I was sick and in jail, but you did not take care of me." (44) Then the people will ask, "Lord, when did we fail to help you when you were hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in jail?" (45) The king will say to them, "Whenever you failed to help any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you failed to do it for me." (46) Then Jesus said, "Those people will be punished forever. But the ones who pleased God will have eternal life."

2 Peter 2:2-4 (CEV) Many people will follow their evil ways and cause others to tell lies about the true way. (3) They will be greedy and cheat you with smooth talk. But long ago God decided to punish them, and God doesn't sleep. (4) God did not have pity on the angels that sinned. He had them tied up and thrown into the dark pits of hell until the time of judgment.

Revelation 20:10-15 (CEV) Then the devil who fooled them will be thrown into the lake of fire and burning sulfur. He will be there with the beast and the false prophet, and they will be in pain day and night forever and ever. (11) I saw a great white throne with someone sitting on it. Earth and heaven tried to run away, but there was no place for them to go. (12) I also saw all the dead people standing in front of that throne. Every one of them was there, no matter who they had once been. Several books were opened, and then the book of life was opened. The dead were judged by what those books said they had done. (13) The sea gave up the dead people who were in it, and death and its kingdom also gave up their dead. Then everyone was judged by what they had done. (14) Afterwards, death and its kingdom were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (15) Anyone whose name wasn't written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:1-8 (CEV) I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared, and so had the sea. (2) Then I saw New Jerusalem, that holy city, coming down from God in heaven. It was like a bride dressed in her wedding gown and ready to meet her husband. (3) I heard a loud voice shout from the throne: God's home is now with his people. He will live with them, and they will be his own. Yes, God will make his home among his people. (4) He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever. (5) Then the one sitting on the throne said: I am making everything new. Write down what I have said. My words are true and can be trusted. (6) Everything is finished! I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give water from the life-giving fountain to everyone who is thirsty. (7) All who win the victory will be given these blessings. I will be their God, and they will be my people. (8) But I will tell you what will happen to cowards and to everyone who is unfaithful or dirty-minded or who murders or is sexually immoral or uses witchcraft or worships idols or tells lies. They will be thrown into that lake of fire and burning sulfur. This is the second death.

Again, I reiterate - GOD DOES NOT WANT ANYONE TO GO TO HELL! He paid the price for our sins so we wouldn't have to go to hell. But we do have to choose His way. We have to believe in Jesus, believe that His sacrifice covered our sins, ask for forgiveness and ask Him to be our Lord and Master. Our part is repenting, believing and trusting. Everything has been done to save each and every person.

What happens to Christians? To those of us who are saved, believers, who are true disciples of Christ? What happens when we die?

There are some different ideas on what happens to immediately after death.

1) We go to Hades, the intermediate place of the dead but on the side of the chasm that is bliss and blessedness, a Paradise. When Jesus comes again, our physical bodies will be resurrected as immortal bodies to join our spirit. During the final judgment, our names will be found in the Lamb's Book of Life and we are given to live in a new Heaven and new Earth with God for an eternity of glory!

2) We go into a "soul sleep" where we are unconscious until Jesus comes again. Then we are raised from the dead. During this "soul sleep" there is no sense of time so it will be, to us, like we just closed our eyes and opened them again to see Jesus. No matter how much time has passed on earth, to us it will seem as though we blinked. Then we will be called and our names will be found in the Lamb's Book of Life.

Let me tell you one thing... No matter which of these occurs, our eternity is assured. Our spirits will live forever with God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. We are promised that Jesus has redeemed us (paid the price for our sins) and we will live in glory forever. We are promised that our physical bodies will be resurrected as immortal bodies to re-join our spirits. We are told in the Holy Bible that when we accept Jesus as our Savior, then our names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life. So how or when or where doesn't concern me at all - I know I am forever taken care of by God.

2 Corinthians 5: 1-6 (Amplified Bible - AMP) (1) For we know that if the tent which is our earthly home is destroyed (dissolved), we have from God a building, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. (2) Here indeed, in this [present abode, body], we sigh and groan inwardly, because we yearn to be clothed over [we yearn to put on our celestial body like a garment, to be fitted out] with our heavenly dwelling, (3) So that by putting it on we may not be found naked (without a body). (4) For while we are still in this tent, we groan under the burden and sigh deeply (weighed down, depressed, oppressed)—not that we want to put off the body (the clothing of the spirit), but rather that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal (our dying body) may be swallowed up by life [[a]after the resurrection]. (5) Now He Who has fashioned us [preparing and making us fit] for this very thing is God, Who also has given us the [Holy] Spirit as a guarantee [of the fulfillment of His promise].

2 Corinthians 5:1-6 (BBE) For we are conscious that if this our tent of flesh is taken down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in heaven. (2) For in this we are crying in weariness, greatly desiring to be clothed with our house from heaven: (3) So that our spirits may not be unclothed. (4) For truly, we who are in this tent do give out cries of weariness, for the weight of care which is on us; not because we are desiring to be free from the body, but so that we may have our new body, and death may be overcome by life. (5) Now he who has made us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a witness of what is to come. (6) So, then, we are ever without fear, and though conscious that while we are in the body we are away from the Lord,

1 Corinthians 15:50-58 (MKJV) And I say this, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does corruption inherit incorruption. (51) Behold, I speak a mystery to you; we shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed; (52) in a moment, in a glance of an eye, at the last trumpet. For a trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall all be changed. (53) For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. (54) But when this corruptible shall put on incorruption, and when this mortal shall put on immortality, then will take place the word that is written, "Death is swallowed up in victory. (55) O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory?" (56) The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the Law. (57) But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (58) So that, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not without fruit in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:51-58 (English Standard Version - ESV) Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, (52) in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. (53) For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. (54) When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." (55) "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" (56) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (58) Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

1 Corinthians 15:51-58 (AMP) (51) Take notice! I tell you a mystery (a secret truth, an event decreed by the hidden purpose or counsel of God). We shall not all fall asleep [in death], but we shall all be changed (transformed) (52) In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the [sound of the] last trumpet call. For a trumpet will sound, and the dead [in Christ] will be raised imperishable (free and immune from decay), and we shall be changed (transformed). (53) For this perishable [part of us] must put on the imperishable [nature], and this mortal [part of us, this nature that is capable of dying] must put on immortality (freedom from death). (54) And when this perishable puts on the imperishable and this that was capable of dying puts on freedom from death, then shall be fulfilled the Scripture that says, Death is swallowed up (utterly vanquished forever) in and unto victory. (55) O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? (56) Now sin is the sting of death, and sin exercises its power [upon the soul] through [the abuse of] the Law. (57) But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory [making us conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ. (58) Therefore, my beloved brethren, be firm (steadfast), immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord [always being superior, excelling, doing more than enough in the service of the Lord], knowing and being continually aware that your labor in the Lord is not futile [it is never wasted or to no purpose].

1 Corinthians 15:51-58 (ERV) But listen, I tell you this secret: We will not all die, but we will all be changed. (52) It will only take the time of a second. We will be changed as quickly as an eye blinks. This will happen when the last trumpet blows. The trumpet will blow and those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we will all be changed. (53) This body that ruins must clothe itself with something that will never ruin. And this body that dies must clothe itself with something that will never die. (54) So this body that ruins will clothe itself with that which never ruins. And this body that dies will clothe itself with that which never dies. When this happens, the Scriptures will be made true: "Death is swallowed in victory." (55) "O death, where is your victory? Where is your power to hurt?" (56) Death's power to hurt is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (57) But we thank God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! (58) So, my dear brothers and sisters, stand strong. Don't let anything change you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord. You know that your work in the Lord is never wasted.

Let's look at more scriptures that talk about what happens to Christians when they die.

Luke 15:4-7 (CEV) If any of you has a hundred sheep, and one of them gets lost, what will you do? Won't you leave the ninety-nine in the field and go look for the lost sheep until you find it? (5) And when you find it, you will be so glad that you will put it on your shoulder (6) and carry it home. Then you will call in your friends and neighbors and say, "Let's celebrate! I've found my lost sheep." (7) Jesus said, "In the same way there is more happiness in heaven because of one sinner who turns to God than over ninety-nine good people who don't need to."

John 14:1-6 (MKJV) Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me. (2) In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, so that where I am, you may be also. (4) And where I go you know, and the way you know. (5) Thomas said to Him, Lord, we do not know where You go, and how can we know the way? (6) Jesus said to him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but by Me.

Hebrews 11:16 (Young's Literal Translation - YLT) But now they stretch forth to a better, that is, a heavenly land. Therefore, God is not ashamed of them, for Him to be called their God; for He prepared a city for them.

Matthew 25:31-34 (CEV) When the Son of Man comes in his glory with all of his angels, he will sit on his royal throne. (32) The people of all nations will be brought before him, and he will separate them, as shepherds separate their sheep from their goats. (33) He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. (34) Then the king will say to those on his right, "My father has blessed you! Come and receive the kingdom that was prepared for you before the world was created.

Luke 23:33-43 (CEV) When the soldiers came to the place called "The Skull," they nailed Jesus to a cross. They also nailed the two criminals to crosses, one on each side of Jesus. (34) Jesus said, "Father, forgive these people! They don't know what they're doing." While the crowd stood there watching Jesus, the soldiers gambled for his clothes. The leaders insulted him by saying, "He saved others. Now he should save himself, if he really is God's chosen Messiah!" (35) (36) The soldiers made fun of Jesus and brought him some wine. (37) They said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!" (38) Above him was a sign that said, "This is the King of the Jews." (39) One of the criminals hanging there also insulted Jesus by saying, "Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and save us!" (40) But the other criminal told the first one off, "Don't you fear God? Aren't you getting the same punishment as this man? (41) We got what was coming to us, but he didn't do anything wrong." (42) Then he said to Jesus, "Remember me when you come into power!" (43) Jesus replied, "I promise that today you will be with me in paradise."

John 5:26-29 (CEV) The Father has the power to give life, and he has given that same power to the Son. (27) And he has given his Son the right to judge everyone, because he is the Son of Man. (28) Don't be surprised! The time will come when all of the dead will hear the voice of the Son of Man, (29) and they will come out of their graves. Everyone who has done good things will rise to life, but everyone who has done evil things will rise and be condemned.

John 10:27-30 (CEV) My sheep know my voice, and I know them. They follow me, (28) and I give them eternal life, so that they will never be lost. No one can snatch them out of my hand. (29) My Father gave them to me, and he is greater than all others. No one can snatch them from his hands, (30) and I am one with the Father.

Romans 5:16-19 (CEV) There is a lot of difference between Adam's sin and God's gift. That one sin led to punishment. But God's gift made it possible for us to be acceptable to him, even though we have sinned many times. (17) Death ruled like a king because Adam had sinned. But that cannot compare with what Jesus Christ has done. God has been so kind to us, and he has accepted us because of Jesus. And so we will live and rule like kings. (18) Everyone was going to be punished because Adam sinned. But because of the good thing that Christ has done, God accepts us and gives us the gift of life. (19) Adam disobeyed God and caused many others to be sinners. But Jesus obeyed him and will make many people acceptable to God.

1 Thessalonians 4: 13-18 (AMP) (13) Now also we would not have you ignorant, brethren, about those who fall asleep [in death], that you may not grieve [for them] as the rest do who have no hope [beyond the grave]. (14) For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will also bring with Him through Jesus those who have fallen asleep [in death]. 15 For this we declare to you by the Lord’s [own] word, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord shall in no way precede [into His presence] or have any advantage at all over those who have previously fallen asleep [in Him in death]. (16) For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud cry of summons, with the shout of an archangel, and with the blast of the trumpet of God. And those who have departed this life in Christ will rise first. (17) Then we, the living ones who remain [on the earth], shall simultaneously be caught up along with [the resurrected dead] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so always (through the eternity of the eternities) we shall be with the Lord! (18) Therefore comfort and encourage one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (CEV) My friends, we want you to understand how it will be for those followers who have already died. Then you won't grieve over them and be like people who don't have any hope. (14) We believe that Jesus died and was raised to life. We also believe that when God brings Jesus back again, he will bring with him all who had faith in Jesus before they died. (15) Our Lord Jesus told us that when he comes, we won't go up to meet him ahead of his followers who have already died. (16) With a loud command and with the shout of the chief angel and a blast of God's trumpet, the Lord will return from heaven. Then those who had faith in Christ before they died will be raised to life. (17) Next, all of us who are still alive will be taken up into the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the sky. From that time on we will all be with the Lord forever. (18) Encourage each other with these words.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (ERV) Brothers and sisters, we want you to know about those who have died. We don't want you to be sad like other people--those who have no hope. (14) We believe that Jesus died, but we also believe that he rose again. So we believe that God will raise to life through Jesus any who have died and bring them together with him when he comes. (15) What we tell you now is the Lord's own message. Those of us who are still living when the Lord comes again will join him, but not before those who have already died. (16) The Lord himself will come down from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. And the people who have died and were in Christ will rise first. (17) After that we who are still alive at that time will be gathered up with those who have died. We will be taken up in the clouds and meet the Lord in the air. And we will be with the Lord forever. (18) So encourage each other with these words.

Hebrews 12:22-25 (King James Version - KJV) But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, (23) To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, (24) And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. (25) See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

Hebrews 12: 22-25 (AMP) (22) But rather, you have come to Mount Zion, even to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to countless multitudes of angels in festal gathering, 23 And to the church (assembly) of the Firstborn who are registered [as citizens] in heaven, and to the God Who is Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous (the redeemed in heaven) who have been made perfect, (24) And to Jesus, the Mediator (Go-between, Agent) of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood which speaks [of mercy], a better and nobler and more gracious message than the blood of Abel [which cried out for vengeance]. (25) So see to it that you do not reject Him or refuse to listen to and heed Him Who is speaking [to you now]. For if they [the Israelites] did not escape when they refused to listen and heed Him Who warned and divinely instructed them [here] on earth [revealing with heavenly warnings His will], how much less shall we escape if we reject and turn our backs on Him Who cautions and admonishes [us] from heaven?

Hebrews 12:22-25 (CEV) You have now come to Mount Zion and to the heavenly Jerusalem. This is the city of the living God, where thousands and thousands of angels have come to celebrate. (23) Here you will find all of God's dearest children, whose names are written in heaven. And you will find God himself, who judges everyone. Here also are the spirits of those good people who have been made perfect. (24) And Jesus is here! He is the one who makes God's new agreement with us, and his sprinkled blood says much better things than the blood of Abel. (25) Make sure that you obey the one who speaks to you. The people did not escape, when they refused to obey the one who spoke to them at Mount Sinai. Do you think you can possibly escape, if you refuse to obey the one who speaks to you from heaven?

1 Peter 1:3-5 (CEV) Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is so good, and by raising Jesus from death, he has given us new life and a hope that lives on. (4) God has something stored up for you in heaven, where it will never decay or be ruined or disappear. (5) You have faith in God, whose power will protect you until the last day. Then he will save you, just as he has always planned to do.

Luke 12:8-9(KJV) Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: (9) But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

Luke 12:8-9 (ERV) "I tell you, if you stand before others and are willing to say you believe in me, then I will say that you belong to me. I will say this in the presence of God's angels. (9) But if you stand before others and say you do not believe in me, then I will say that you do not belong to me. I will say this in the presence of God's angels.
Revelation 2:7 (MKJV) He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat of the Tree of Life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

When Jesus comes back to establish His Kingdom, satan and his demons and the unsaved end up in the Lake of Fire. But He also introduces a new Heaven and a new Earth. And this is our final destination. He has prepared a place for us where everything is perfect. Do you know why the streets of Heaven are gold, the foundations precious stones and the gates giant pearl? Because we will finally understand what our real treasure is - God! We will never be tempted to covet, steal, hoard such things again. No more greed or selfishness. God can give us anything and everything because we no longer idolize things. God will be first and always our one true love, The one we desire with all our hearts.

Revelation 21:1-5 (ERV) Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared. Now there was no sea. (2) And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It was prepared like a bride dressed for her husband. (3) I heard a loud voice from the throne. It said, "Now God's home is with people. He will live with them. They will be his people. God himself will be with them and will be their God. (4) He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, sadness, crying, or pain. All the old ways are gone." (5) The one who was sitting on the throne said, "Look, I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this, because these words are true and can be trusted."

Revelation 21:11-27 (CEV) The glory of God made the city bright. It was dazzling and crystal clear like a precious jasper stone. (12) The city had a high and thick wall with twelve gates, and each one of them was guarded by an angel. On each of the gates was written the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. (13) Three of these gates were on the east, three were on the north, three more were on the south, and the other three were on the west. (14) The city was built on twelve foundation stones. On each of the stones was written the name of one of the Lamb's twelve apostles. (15) The angel who spoke to me had a gold measuring stick to measure the city and its gates and its walls. (16) The city was shaped like a cube, because it was just as high as it was wide. When the angel measured the city, it was about fifteen hundred miles high and fifteen hundred miles wide. (17) Then the angel measured the wall, and by our measurements it was about two hundred sixteen feet high. (18) The wall was built of jasper, and the city was made of pure gold, clear as crystal. (19) Each of the twelve foundations was a precious stone. The first was jasper, the second was sapphire, the third was agate, the fourth was emerald, (20) the fifth was onyx, the sixth was carnelian, the seventh was chrysolite, the eighth was beryl, the ninth was topaz, the tenth was chrysoprase, the eleventh was jacinth, and the twelfth was amethyst. (21) Each of the twelve gates was a solid pearl. The streets of the city were made of pure gold, clear as crystal. (22) I did not see a temple there. The Lord God All-Powerful and the Lamb were its temple. (23) And the city did not need the sun or the moon. The glory of God was shining on it, and the Lamb was its light. (24) Nations will walk by the light of that city, and kings will bring their riches there. (25) Its gates are always open during the day, and night never comes. (26) The glorious treasures of nations will be brought into the city. (27) But nothing unworthy will be allowed to enter. No one who is dirty-minded or who tells lies will be there. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life will be in the city.

Revelation 22:1-6 (CEV) The angel showed me a river that was crystal clear, and its waters gave life. The river came from the throne where God and the Lamb were seated. (2) Then it flowed down the middle of the city's main street. On each side of the river are trees that grow a different kind of fruit each month of the year. The fruit gives life, and the leaves are used as medicine to heal the nations. (3) God's curse will no longer be on the people of that city. He and the Lamb will be seated there on their thrones, and its people will worship God (4) and will see him face to face. God's name will be written on the foreheads of the people. (5) Never again will night appear, and no one who lives there will ever need a lamp or the sun. The Lord God will be their light, and they will rule forever. (6) Then I was told: These words are true and can be trusted. The Lord God controls the spirits of his prophets, and he is the one who sent his angel to show his servants what must happen right away.
Revelation 22:14-15 (CEV) God will bless all who have washed their robes. They will each have the right to eat fruit from the tree that gives life, and they can enter the gates of the city. (15) But outside the city will be dogs, witches, immoral people, murderers, idol worshipers, and everyone who loves to tell lies and do wrong.

Romans 2:5-11 (ERV) But you are so stubborn! You refuse to change. So you are making your own punishment greater and greater. You will be punished on the day when God will show his anger. On that day everyone will see how right God is to judge people. (6) He will reward or punish everyone for what they have done. (7) Some people live for God's glory, for honor, and for life that cannot be destroyed. They live for those things by always continuing to do good. God will give eternal life to them. (8) But others are selfish and refuse to follow truth. They follow evil. God will show his anger and punish them. (9) He will give trouble and suffering to everyone who does evil--to the Jews first and also to those who are not Jews. (10) But he will give glory, honor, and peace to everyone who does good--to the Jews first and also to those who are not Jews. (11) God judges everyone the same. It doesn't matter who they are.

I don't know about you, but it begins to look a whole lot better to be saved rather than to be unsaved! Let's compare: Heaven vs. Hell
What would you choose?
For me, it's a slam dunk! Heaven! I choose Jesus Christ!

Heaven is not about you getting a pair of wings and a harp which you strum and and sing while sitting on a cloud! That's about as ridiculous as the picture of the devil, red with a barbed tail, horns and a pitchfork. Heaven is not boring and Hell is no party.

There is a final reckoning between ever human being and our Maker. Those of us who are saved through Jesus Christ, will go to Heaven. But we also will receive rewards based on our good works. Those who are not saved will receive appropriate punishment forever. God rewards us for the good things we did, the good attitudes we maintained, the kindness we showed others, the faithfulness even when others didn't understand, mocked, persecuted, made fun of. God sees our hearts and knows every thought and action so we will all be perfectly judged. There will be no misunderstanding. There will be no variable that God does not consider. He is the perfect Judge. And, as His Children, we should desire to do good works not only because we love God and, therefore, His creation (including human beings whom He created). But also because we want rewards in Heaven. We want to to store up treasures in Heaven. We are saved by faith in Jesus based on His Work and nothing we can do will save ourselves. We only believe. But our works will be judges as to give us rewards. We don't know what those rewards will be. Some call these rewards "crowns".

1 Peter 5:4 (CEV) Then when Christ the Chief Shepherd returns, you will be given a crown that will never lose its glory.

2 Timothy 4:8 (CEV) So a crown will be given to me for pleasing the Lord. He judges fairly, and on the day of judgment he will give a crown to me and to everyone else who wants him to appear with power.

Matthew 6:19-21 (MKJV) Do not lay up treasures on earth for yourselves, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. (20) But lay up treasures in Heaven for yourselves, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. (21) For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Mark 10:17-31 (CEV) As Jesus was walking down a road, a man ran up to him. He knelt down, and asked, "Good teacher, what can I do to have eternal life?" (18) Jesus replied, "Why do you call me good? Only God is good. (19) You know the commandments. 'Do not murder. Be faithful in marriage. Do not steal. Do not tell lies about others. Do not cheat. Respect your father and mother.'" (20) The man answered, "Teacher, I have obeyed all these commandments since I was a young man." (21) Jesus looked closely at the man. He liked him and said, "There's one thing you still need to do. Go sell everything you own. Give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come with me." (22) When the man heard Jesus say this, he went away gloomy and sad because he was very rich. (23) Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "It's hard for rich people to get into God's kingdom!" (24) The disciples were shocked to hear this. So Jesus told them again, "It's terribly hard to get into God's kingdom! (25) In fact, it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to get into God's kingdom." (26) Jesus' disciples were even more amazed. They asked each other, "How can anyone ever be saved?" (27) Jesus looked at them and said, "There are some things that people cannot do, but God can do anything." (28) Peter replied, "Remember, we left everything to be your followers!" (29) Jesus told him: You can be sure that anyone who gives up home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or land for me and for the good news (30) will be rewarded. In this world they will be given a hundred times as many houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and pieces of land, though they will also be mistreated. And in the world to come, they will have eternal life. (31) But many who are now first will be last, and many who are now last will be first.

Luke 6:35 (CEV) But love your enemies and be good to them. Lend without expecting to be paid back. Then you will get a great reward, and you will be the true children of God in heaven. He is good even to people who are unthankful and cruel.

1 Corinthians 3:8 (CEV) The one who plants is just as important as the one who waters. And each one will be paid for what they do.

Colossians 3:24-25 (CEV) In fact, the Lord Christ is the one you are really serving, and you know that he will reward you. (25) But Christ has no favorites! He will punish evil people, just as they deserve.

Matthew 16:27 (CEV) The Son of Man will soon come in the glory of his Father and with his angels to reward all people for what they have done.

Luke 8:17 (LITV) For nothing is hidden which will not be revealed, nor secret which will not be known and come to be revealed.

Luke 12:2-3 (LITV) But there is nothing which has been completely concealed which will not be uncovered, nor hidden which will not be known. (3) Therefore, whatever you said in the darkness will be heard in the light; and whatever you spoke in the ear in the secret rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

1 Corinthians 4:4-5 (LITV) For I know nothing of myself, but I have not been justified by this; but He judging me is the Lord. (5) Then do not judge anything before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both shed light on the hidden things of darkness and will reveal the counsels of the hearts. And then praise will be to each one from God.

Acts 17:31 (CEV) He has set a day when he will judge the world's people with fairness. And he has chosen the man Jesus to do the judging for him. God has given proof of this to all of us by raising Jesus from death.

2 Corinthians 5:10 (CEV) After all, Christ will judge each of us for the good or the bad that we do while living in these bodies.

Romans 14:10 (CEV) Why do you criticize other followers of the Lord? Why do you look down on them? The day is coming when God will judge all of us.

Psalms 96:13b He is coming to judge all people on earth with fairness and truth.

Psalms 9:7 He is coming to judge all people on earth with fairness and truth.

So now we know, as Christians our eternity is sure in the Hands of God! Our eternity will be full of love, glory, rewards. So shall we ever be with the Lord. His Kingdom forever and ever. No more sadness, no more tears, no more sin, no more bondage to sin, no more evil. Things will finally be the way they were meant to be. Our habitation will be beauty that is beyond our imagination. There is no more separation in our relationship with God. We will have fellowship with all those Christians who have gone on before. No more goodbyes, no more misunderstandings, no more relationship problems with each other. No more darkness, no more sickness, no more hunger or thirst, no more limitations to exploring the wonders of God and His creation.

Tuesday's Tip - Saving Maps And Photos Directly From Your Screen

Tuesday's Tip - Tuesday’s Tip is a daily blogging prompt used by many genealogy bloggers at Geneabloggers.com to help them post content on their sites. What advice would you give to another genealogist or family historian, especially someone just starting out?

************************************************

Do you ever find something on Google maps and you want to save the screen shot of the map? Do you ever find a blog and you would like to do a screen capture and save it as an image for future reference? I was having a hard time finding a way to do this and yet, it's really simple. Let's see if I can break it down for you.

1) Go to Google maps and type in a state, county, city, or address. Let's look at what information you can get and the options you have at this screen.
  • You get an idea of the city borders

This is Lexington, Davidson County, NC. From this you can collect information, as well as, save as a graphic file (picture, photo, screen capture).

  • You can zoom in and look at the street names

  • Some businesses show up on this so you may locate a certain place like the library, the courthouse, the health department.

  • You can switch from map view to satellite view by clicking on the satellite square in the lower left corner.

Satellite view

  • You can click on a specific location and the street address will usually show up, as well as the coordinates. You can Copy and Paste the address or coordinates into other software such as your genealogy software.

  • If there is a street view, it will pop up underneath the address. Click on this and it will zoom you down to street level. You can click around and get 360 degree views or click down a street and travel up and down the street. Play with it to get comfortable.

  • At any of these screens, you can capture the screen the screen view and save it as a graphic file (picture, photo, jpg) for your use. I went to street level, found the courthouse and did a screen capture and saved it. We will look at how to do this now.

2) Once you find what you are looking for (whether its the map, satellite view, street level view like the courthouse above), there are several ways to save this as a graphic file.
  • Use the "Prt Scn" key on your computer keyboard. This should save the entire screen to your clipboard. Go into a graphics software such as Windows Paint or Adobe Photoshop Elements and go to the Menu. Select File, New, and then paste from clipboard. Your image should show up and you can add arrows, text boxes with text, shapes, X marks the spot, etc. Then Save As and save as a .jpg file.
  • Or use the Snip It tool of Windows.
  • Use a free software downloaded to your computer such as Jing. This software adds a graphic to the top of your screen (that you can move by clicking and dragging) much like the Pinterest button. You can click on that button and get a tool that allows you to select all or part of the screen and capture that image and save it to your computer. Jing only allows you to save it as a .png file and you can use graphics software to save it as a .jpg file. But there are other free screen capture software such as Faststone. This software not only allows you to select all or part of the screen to capture and save it as a .jpg file. But allows you to do some image editing too. You can also purchase software for more options such as SnagIt.

Now lets look at the uses for this in genealogy.

I'm in SC, but from my chair at home, I can find my grandparents' home place and I want a photo of the house, as well as, a picture of the map where it's found.

Papa and Grandma's house and farm are in a satellite view. I can choose map or satellite view. In this photo I tried to shade what I think was the general boundaries of Papa and his father's property so I can see how they related to each other.

I can find the church Papa and Grandma were members of and save a picture of it. I opened it in Adobe Photoshop Elements and added a text box where I documented the street address.

When I found the original delayed birth certificate of my grandfather in Ancestry.com. I was able to select just a portion and save it. Then I opened it in Adobe Photoshop and added some highlighting and a text box to add the source information.

I hope this gives you some tips and ideas on how to use screen captures for your genealogy work.

Recycle Those Entertainment Centers

Thrift stores have a glut of old entertainment centers and TV cabinets. I have two myself. But they are heavy pieces of wood furniture that have many other uses besides housing the old tube TVs. Just because you get flat screen TVs doesn't mean you have to get rid of the deep entertainment center. You can reuse, repurpose, recycle old entertainment centers. Everyone has seen the great children's kitchens that have been made by handy, creative individuals out of these recycled entertainment centers. But I looked for other uses. Right now, one of my entertainment centers still houses a TV, a flat screen TV in my bedroom. The other is in the living room and holds our stereo. And don't forget those old television cabinets! With just a little creativity and maybe some DIY skills, you can turn them into interesting and functional pieces again.

But I scoured the internet with a Google search and found these fantastic ideas. They are not my ideas and I greatly appreciate those who share their ideas and creativity.

Shopping Saturday - Tupperware Parties

$

Have you ever been to a Tupperware Party? I have. It was a right of passage as a new wife and new housewife for many of us. I found this vintage Tupperware party invitation dated from the year of my birth, 1959.

And, yes, my Mom had Tupperware like this. We had the pastel glasses, bowls and the 3 piece mixing bowl set along with other odds and ends. She even had the long Tupperware teaspoons that were never used at our house.

So the old pastels (as you see in this cabinet) put me right back in my childhood.

I got married at the ripe old age of barely 18 yrs old. I was 18 for about 2 1/2 weeks when we got married back in 1977. My first Tupperware Party was at my Mother-in-law's home and I could only afford a little sandwich box for my husband to take his sandwiches to work in. (He promptly lost it.) But it whet my appetite and I collected Tupperware until the end of the 1980's when cheaper stuff started coming out. I attended parties and gave parties. I gave parties until my last one when NOBODY came. I guess I had Tupperwared them out. Eventually I got rid of nearly all my Tupperware because of the dated colors. I mean all that 70's and early 80's orange, brown and lime green got on my nerves.

If I have one criticism of Tupperware, it's the colors. I wonder how hard it would be to order something in any color your want or at least have a slew of color choices that never change, you just add to it for new colors. Then people could order the item with a color of their choice, whether it's the old pink or the new hot pink. Surely they have thought of that, so it must not be possible. But that's my beef.

Another problem with Tupperware is their prices. I know making good quality plastics is no longer prohibitively expensive so I can only guess it's their home party system that adds to the costs. Why pay $40 for a tea pitcher when you can get one at Walmart for $7?

So I drifted away from Tupperware but, always in the back of my mind, I wanted a matching Tupperware pantry. It was sort of my dream pantry system. I just couldn't afford it.

I guess I had a picture of Tupperware nirvana in the back of my head. I tried to create an organized kitchen and pantry without the expense of Tupperware but it never matched the dream. I mean, all those little perfectly matching, tailor fitted, labelled pieces of Tupperware......

In the last couple of years, I've found tons of old Tupperware for sale at yard sales, thrift stores, and online. At much more reasonable prices. So slowly I'd begun to buy it again.

BUT.....

Is it BPA free? If you are like me, the term BPA didn't ring a bell. I thought plastic was plastic. I didn't know there was a difference between food grade or any other grades. I certainly had never heard of BPA and EAs. I figured plastic had been around long enough to have all the wrinkles ironed out, if you know what I mean. We use plastic containers, wraps, bottles, packaging, ziploc bags, etc. And I have my whole life (born in 1959). As I said, I thought plastics must be really safe by now.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a carbon-based synthetic compound. It is a colorless solid that is soluble in organic solvents, but poorly soluble in water. It has been in commercial use since 1957. BPA exhibits hormone-like properties that raise concern about its suitability in some consumer products and food containers. A 2010 report from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified possible hazards to fetuses, infants, and young children. However, an FDA assessment released in March 2013 said that BPA is safe at the very low levels that occur in some foods. In July 2014, the FDA updated its perspective on the use of BPA in food contact applications, confirming that "BPA is safe at the current levels occurring in foods" based on extensive research, including two more studies issued by the agency in early 2014. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reviewed new scientific information on BPA in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2015: EFSA’s experts concluded on each occasion that they could not identify any new evidence which would lead them to revise their opinion that the presently known levels of exposure to BPA is safe; however, EFSA does recognize some uncertainties, and will continue to investigate them...The major human exposure route to BPA is diet, including ingestion of contaminated food and water. Bisphenol A is leached from the lining of food and beverage cans where it is used as an ingredient in the plastic used to protect the food from direct contact with the can. It is especially likely to leach from plastics when they are cleaned with harsh detergents or when they contain acidic or high-temperature liquids. BPA is used to form epoxy resin coating of water pipes in older buildings... In adults, BPA is eliminated from the body through a detoxification process in the liver. In infants and children, this pathway is not fully developed so they have a decreased ability to clear BPA from their systems... Bisphenol A is an endocrine disruptor that can mimic estrogen and has been shown to cause negative health effects in animal studies. To be specific, bisphenol A closely mimics the structure and function of the hormone estradiol with the ability to bind to and activate the same estrogen receptor as the natural hormone... BPA works by imitating the natural hormone 17B-estradiol. In the past BPA has been considered a weak mimicker of estrogen but newer evidence indicates that it is a potent mimickerhen it binds to estrogen receptors it triggers alternative estrogenic effects that begin outside of the nucleus. This different path induced by BPA has been shown to alter glucose and lipid metabolism in animal studies... A 2007 review concluded that bisphenol-A has been shown to bind to thyroid hormone receptor and perhaps has selective effects on its functions.- Wikipedia, 6/15/2015

I will stop here as it's getting too technical for me. Some indicators show not much risk and some indicators show there may be risk. We get BPAs from a lot of sources outside our knowledge, such as food packaging. Did you notice it said, "(BPA) is leached from the lining of food and beverage cans where it is used as an ingredient in the plastic used to protect the food from direct contact with the can." So we are exposed to BPAs from canned drinks and canned food if I understand this correctly. That's something I cannot control. Will I give up buying Cokes and canned green beans? No, it's hardwired into my psyche. Sorry. If I'm already getting BPAs from sources beyond my control does should I add to them by using plastic containers in my kitchen? Or does that mean it must not be such a big deal, so I will continue to use my plastic containers in my kitchen? Only you can decide.

As of March 2010, items sold by Tupperware US and CA are BPA free. That comes from the Tupperware company. But BPA free is not necessarily EA free. That's a whole 'nother subject. I don't know where they stand on EAs. It seems that leaching (chemicals leaching) into food stored in plastic, and reheating in plastics via the microwave, are the concerns.

So is old Tupperware safe? Do NOT microwave in anything plastic even if it says it's microwave safe. Transfer it to a glass, porcelain, or china bowl. You can also find many glass, stainless steel, porcelain storage containers with lids now. Using an inert material such as glass, stainless steel, porcelain won't leach chemicals into stored or reheated foods. There may be other ways to use old Tupperware besides food storage, but do some research into BPAs and make an informed decision whether or not to use your old pieces of Tupperware for food preparation, food storage, and serving. And, it seems, Tupperware containers made after 2010 is safe so new pieces should be OK. And there are many new products and colors available. But if you are interested in VINTAGE Tupperware, do a search at Ebay or Etsy or do a Google search. You can find it easily. I do NOT sell Tupperware or vintage wares of any kind. I do not have a business. But it won't be hard for you to find.

As I said, I loved Tupperware for it's convenience and light weight practicality. It usually lasts for years and is easy to clean. They also have the lifetime warranty for those times when something unusual happens such as cracking. They don't replace it if it's melted or warped (your fault) but cracking and peeling can be manufacturing defects and they will replace for the cost of SandH. Older pieces are also available easily and inexpensively all over the place.

It's definitely a childhood memory trigger for me. I can remember my Aunt Ruth using a Tupperware creamer to pour cream in her coffee cup. I remember drinking iced tea and Koolaid in Mom's pastel Tupperware glasses. I remember eating my cereal out of the pastel cereal bowls. It's just one of those things that makes me a little dreamy eyed.

According to Wikipedia, Tupperware is a home products line that includes preparation, storage, containment, and serving products for the kitchen and home. Earl Silas Tupper invented the plastic for Tupperware in 1938. In 1942, he developed his first bell shaped container; the brand products were introduced to the public in 1948. The once-patented "burping seal" was a famous aspect of Tupperware, which distinguished it from competitors. Once you burped the seal, it was considered airtight. The product began to be sold through presentation home parties in 1949. Holding Tupperware Parties allowed women of the 1950s to earn an income from home. Women had hit the factories and working places during World War II while men were serving our country in the military. After the men came home and flooded the job markets, women needed new opportunities. They liked making their own income and the independence it had given them. But the men needed the jobs, so women were looking for ways to make extra income without male competition. The "Party" model builds on skills developed by a housewife (such as party planning, hosting a party, social events with friends and neighbors) and created an alternative choice for women who needed or wanted to work. Ms. Brownie Wise (1913–92), a former sales representative of Stanley Home Products, developed the home party strategy. Tupper was so impressed that Brownie Wise was made vice president of marketing in 1951. Tupperware popularity exploded thanks to Tupperware ladies (aka consultants or representatives) and the company's Jubilees which were "outlandish" themed parties or rallies celebrating the products and the Tupperware ladies, encouraging them and giving them new strategies for their sales. It was a way to recognize and reward top sellers. In 1958, Earl Tupper fired Brownie Wise and sold the business to Rexall. It's gone through many changes but the quality of the product has remained.

But, if it took 60 yrs to find out about BPAs what will we find out about the new silicone that is so popular now?

I used to enjoy a small Tupperware party. I always learned something and enjoyed getting together with a few friends and family and playing the little games. Of course, I always felt pressured to reciprocate and give a party or, worse yet, to become a Tupperware lady, and that was uncomfortable. But the products were useful and high quality. I think the home party sales strategy is probably on it's last leg. People are busy, they don't want to have or attend parties and feel pressured to sell or have a party and they want to take their time shopping. Internet online shopping is probably the future. But I wanted to share some of the vintage Tupperware and vintage ads I found on the Internet. If you are old enough, it will bring back some memories for you too. If you are like me, you will be saying, "I remember Mom had one of those" or "Grandma used to have that".

Tupperware gadgets that were party favors and game prizes.

The red piece was suppose to be a scrubber. It would get in corner. The long orange piece was an orange or grapefruit peeler. The little yellow tongs were for capping strawberries. There is a white over-the-door hook. The white rectangular box was to cover toothbrush heads for travel. The flat yellow piece with the serated edges was for making designs in cake icing.

The green piece on the left was to put a piece of butter in and used to butter corn on the cob. The yellow thing in the middle is the orange and grapefruit peeler. The orange on the right was a shrimp de-veiner.

In this photo you have a scoop, a measuring spoon, the corn butterer, sippy cup lids and an orange and grapefruit peeler. The long green thing with serated edge was a lettuce corer. The green and orange things in the upper right corner were for plunging into an orange, lemon or lime for juice.

In this picture you have the green lettuce corer, a book marker, a beige pickle and olive server (good for getting them out of a jar), a wall plaque for keyrings and a dark gray icing decorator. The yellow thing with the hooks on each end was to neaten electrical or phone cords. The brown piece in the bottom right corner was a small ruler/letter opener/book mark. The beige thing that looks like a pair of fake lips (LOL) were for holding a knife on the counter. And the bottle caps. The rings fit over a Coke or Pepsi bottle and the lid can cap it.

Chalkboard Paint

Black board paint, or chalk board paint, is easily available now and in various colors. If you have an inner child that wants to draw, write or paint on the walls, this may be just what you need! Or if you have children who would like to draw on the walls. If you are good at lettering or are an artist, you can really take the "drawing on the walls" to a new height. I looked on the Internet and did a Google search and found some beautifully creative ideas. Whether it's used for labeling, helping you organize, scheduling, making lists, brainstorming, or letting your creativity have it's way, blackboard paint can help you with these.

I don't have anything painted with chalkboard paint because I'm no artist, my handwriting isn't the best and I remember having to clean old chalkboards and erasers from school days. Lot of chalk dust. But I thought some of these ideas were really good. I think the main thing is when you erase something, you have to clean it with water to get the original color back to it's depth. So here is what I found and I hope it gives you some ideas.

Gamewell Calhoun Harris was born 5/26/1853 in Union County, SC to Fleming Matthew Harris and Augusta Ann Harris and he died 10/21/1933 in Union County, SC. Sarah Clementine Brakefield was born 4/18/1860 in York County, SC to James M. Brakefield and Sarah Emmaline Roach. She died 3/6/1930 in Union County, SC. Our grandniece, Savannah, was rocking the look for July the 4th! We always get together at Stan's sister's house for a big cookout. Stan and Luke made hash, Eddie made smoked boston butts and hot dogs. Then we had all the sides you can think of. She has a pool but this year it was a little cool for in the pool. But we enjoyed her big yard and a tent for shade. I will add more 4th of July scrapbook pages to this post as I make them.

Our grandnephews, Brett and Ryan, and grandniece, Brooke, celebrated the 4th of July out in California with some friends. Jenny sent us these photos of their 4th of July.

Our grandnephew, Cash, has his first 4th of July!

Mom and Dad were invited to Kathi's and they enjoyed it.

If you have read my blog you know that it is made up of posts about things that interest me such as books I've read, Bible studies I've done, some history, my digital scrapbook pages, family times, genealogy, household and home decorating tips, organizing, etc. That's why I called it Sharon Scrapbook. It's the bits and pieces that I find interesting in life. I work a lot on genealogy in the family lines of myself and my husband and have done years and years of work, some of which I share on my blog. So I document our family's past but I also document our family today with my digital scrapbooking. And I'm always aware that what I document of the past and present will be what's shared in the future. So it all goes together for me. Our family lived through the history that you read in the history books. So did yours! And what you are living through today will be what your descendants will look back upon. Everybody has stories that may not be flattering. It's because our family were human beings just like we are and they were a product of their times and their shared experiences. Just like we are today. What will our descendants, those in our family who are in the future, our great great grandchildren... what will they think of us when they look back at their genealogy and see our names written in the turbulent times we live in? Will they understand our mistakes or will they judge us? Will they be proud of us or ashamed of us? If we see it this way, then maybe, we can look back at those who came before us with a more experienced eye. It's silly to say that your family were bluebloods and never had a stain against it's name. Because there is always someone who you might not be as proud to call "family" as others. It's equally silly to say that your family were something to be ashamed of because there is always someone who you can be proud of to call "family". Why? Because we are all human beings who lived during our times and had experiences and circumstances that shaped us. We are all equally born sinners with an evil sinful human nature. We are all equally able to be saved through the Lord Jesus Christ and the work HE did on the cross. Knowing that we all equally come into this world and we all equally leave this world in the same ways. And the fact that we all live just like human beings have always lived, one step at a time, means we should not judge each other harshly. We should be more understanding. Instead we seem to become more and more judgmental of each other instead of less. We begin to pontificate and point fingers as though we were superior in some way. I'm not prettier or no uglier than anyone else. I'm no fatter or thinner than anyone else. I'm no more white or black than anyone else. I'm no more old or young than anyone else. We are who we are. We were born a certain way and we have no input to that. We can't be held accountable for our big feet or our wide hips or our weak fingernails. Then we were raised in circumstances in which we had no choice in the matter. For instance I was born in 1959 and I can't help that I wasn't born in 1984 or 1934. I was born in a small town in TN so I can't help that I wasn't born in NY or in FL. I was born into a good family (which I'm thankful for) but it wasn't due to anything I did. Some of you may have been born into a "bad" family situation and it wasn't your fault. I can't help that my parents stayed happily married any more than you can help that your parents didn't. I was born into a certain middle income and it wasn't anything I could do about it. I wasn't poor but we certainly weren't rich. It wasn't my fault that my Mom made my clothes nor is it your fault that your Mom couldn't sew and you got your clothes from the department store or that you were too poor and had to wear hand me downs (my sisters had to wear my hand me downs). So you see, there are so many things that shape us but which we had no control over. And then there are the things in history that shape us. For instance I remember when John F. Kennedy was assassinated, when Martin Luther King was assassinated, the Vietnam War was going on, etc. These things affected my family and, therefore, me and it shaped me to some degree whether I realized it or not. For instance, whenever I hear a "Special Report" interrupt daily TV programming, I immediately fear that the President has been assassinated and I start saying a prayer under my breath. I was only a little kid when John F. Kennedy was killed but it affected me that way. If it affected me that way, then how do you think it affected our ancestors when war was declared or when Lincoln was assassinated or when the first airplane was spotted over their little town? Being raised in tiny TN mountain towns until we moved to Spartanburg in 1967, I had not seen many black people. I was about 6 yrs old (1965?) when I remember seeing my first black person walking down main street on our way to the Dairy Queen. I had sung the song, "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world, red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world." But I was actually seeing a human being that had a different color. This was during the Civil Rights era but my parents had protected us from all the bad stuff. And my dear parents, who had been raised in a generation that had seen things VERY differently, were progressive enough to use that time at the Dairy Queen to teach me about how God loved all human beings despite their color. And they very seriously told me that it would hurt their feelings to call them names. I remember it so clearly, how they told me that black people preferred to be called Negroes or Colored People but never call them N***rs. I always had a very sensitive heart and could get my feelings hurt easily so I couldn't imagine hurting someone's feelings deliberately. I just never wanted to inflict that kind of hurt so I was shocked that others would hurt someone by calling them bad names and hating them because of the color of their skin (it's not like they had a choice on their color). So, over ice cream, my parents taught me a very valuable lesson that I clearly remember today. Again, my parents were raised in a segregated South. My father's father had been taught by his preacher that black people didn't have a soul and wouldn't go to heaven! But I never knew my grandfather to be anything but kind and generous to anyone, including blacks, that he had dealings with. And my parents had thought for themselves and realized that God loved all human beings no matter what color and they lived their entire life with those convictions and passed them down to us. But I can't harshly judge others when I know that they didn't have the same raising I had. They grew up in a segregated South and had been taught differently so they may have responded differently. I have to look back and try to understand the times they were raised in. Does that excuse them from terrible crimes? No. If they committed crimes, hate crimes, then there should have been justice. I don't excuse but I try to see a bigger picture when it's called for. I happened to find a young man who was a very distant cousin. His story fascinated me because he and his friend were going from still to still (like going bar to bar today) in the mountains on a drinking binge. They ended up spying a farmer leaving his shack and knew his daughter was there alone and that the man usually had money. So they murdered the girl with an ax and stole the man's money. This distant cousin turned on his friend so I don't know if the cousin or his friend actually murdered the girl because it was basically his word that it wasn't him, he was just the look out. But the friend was hanged for murder and the cousin was jailed and died in jail within a year. The whole trial and transcript was found in newspaper stories as far as Australia! Am I proud that a distant cousin was an ax murderer, drunk and thief? No! Do I excuse what he did? No! Was it an interesting story? Yes. There was no excuse or justification for his actions, but in looking at the larger picture, I was able to see how things worked back then. Because I've studied and thought on history so much I was able to look at the story as though I were a fly on the wall, seeing how things really looked. Not a cleaned up version or a dumbed down version but as things might have really been. You can't do that if you don't have any knowledge of history. For instance, the heat in the un-air conditioned courthouse would have made close quarters and a crowd unbearable! The smell alone (before deodorants, colognes, toothpaste) would have knocked us out. No dentists and modern dental technology meant plenty of missing teeth, foul breath, buck teeth, crowded teeth, rotted teeth. No plastic surgeons so no breast reductions or breast augmentations, birth marks, cleft palates, etc. No hair dyes, little makeup, etc would have made crowds look a lot different than today. I remember signs on businesses that said "No shoes, no service" and this was in my lifetime! People used to go barefoot, at least during the summer, a lot more than they do today. You saved your shoes, if you had any, for church and such. People didn't have indoor plumbing and washing machines like they do today so washing clothes was a big chore. Therefore you protected your clothes by wearing aprons, paper collars and cuffs, sleeve garters to hold your sleeves up on your arm and keep them from getting dirty, even dress shields (like Kotex for under your arms, it soaked up the sweat and was easier to clean than a dress was). You came home from church and took your dress off and spent the afternoon in your slip before putting your dress back on to go back to church. You came home from school and changed into your play clothes so you didn't ruin your school clothes. All these things are so different today when clothes are easier to get and easier to keep clean due to our technology.

As you can see, you can't look at anyone in history without looking at their life as they lived it. A great many things were beyond their control and they were the products of a way of life they had no control over. On the other hand, there were things they could control (like that ax murderer) but because they made the wrong choices they, and their loved ones, suffered from it. It's no different today than it was 100 years ago or 1,000 years ago. We are born into things that we have little or no control over and we make choices, good or bad, that also affect us.

Let's look at the "Confederate Flag" issue. From our point of view today, we may not can understand how slavery was ever allowed in the world. It still goes on today but we, as Americans, see it as evil. And it was used by evil human beings as a way to subjugate people. I do not excuse nor do I belittle the horrible things that were done to slaves. But there is a bigger picture. We don't know it unless we study it. We aren't told about it unless we look for it and study it. As many times as there were horrors done to black slaves, there were good things done for black slaves. I do think that slavery is ripe for abuse. Whenever ANYONE is under the control of another, there is the chance of abuse of power. Whether it's children being abused by parents, women abused by husbands, husbands abused by wives, elderly parents abused by children.... absolute power corrupts absolutely. But you can also say that there are just as many good things done under someone else's "power" as there are evil. For instance, my parents were absolutely wonderful. Not perfect, but wonderful people who protected me, loved me, helped me, supported me, trained me and provided for me even at the sacrifice of themselves. I was a child so I was completely under their control but they did not abuse their control. They used it for my good. All parents aren't abusive. All parents aren't good.

Same for my husband. He is a good man who has protected and provided for me and made sure I had the best of whatever we could afford. I'm disabled. I cannot work or support myself so I'm dependent upon him. He did not abuse his control over me. He used it for my good. All husbands aren't abusive. All husbands aren't good.

My parents are elderly. In a lot of ways they are becoming dependent upon us, their children and our spouses, to take care of them. One sister takes care of their finances and makes sure their bills are paid. I try to buy things they need and take them places they need to go. Another sister goes with them to a doctor's visit and helps take care of their dogs. We all have helped take care of things around the house, etc. We are trying to be good daughters and sons-in-laws (and now good grandchildren) and take care of them. They certainly took good care of us. Could we steal from them? Yes. Could we neglect them? Yes. Could we beat them? Yes. Do we? NO! We don't abuse the control or power we have over them. They didn't do it to us and we won't do it to them in their times of need. All children don't abuse their elderly parents. All children aren't always good to their parents.

As you can see, it's less the institution (of marriage) or the relationship (as in families) that is evil or good. It's the hearts of those in power. So were slaves treated badly? Yes and No. We know that some were treated horribly and there is plenty of evidence of it. But we should also know that many were treated well, even as family members. If I paid $50,000 for a new car would I take it mudding? Some would but most of us would take good care of that car because we invested so much in it and we need it. Same for slaves. Slaves usually cost more than the land they worked. Would it make good business sense to mistreat the workers you depend on for your living? So, even if you thought of slaves as property, rather than as human beings, it wouldn't make good sense to mistreat them. Instead, you should want to treat them well so you get more work out of them and so they are healthy and reproduce for your future needs. So, even if you thought of them as no more than animals, you should have enough sense to treat them well enough for them to be a good investment. Then there were those who did realize they were human beings but with the world that they lived in, black people had a harder time free (how does a free black man/woman make a living in those times?) than they would being the slaves of a kind master. So they were treated well because they were co-workers, companions and friends. And, of course, we already talked about those who abused slaves. This was indulging their worst evils because under no circumstances did it make logical sense, but they did it anyway because they were a naturally cruel person. They would the same ones who would abuse their wives, children, and any other vulnerable person they have control over. We have them today just like we had them in the antebellum South and just as we had them in the Middle Ages. It's those people that give the rest of us bad names!

Can we now look at that time period in history and judge them? We can say that those who committed atrocities against slaves (or any human being) were wrong with no excuse. We can say that there were others who were trapped in their times, were raised in ways, lived in circumstances but they made the best of their lives and treated others kindly and generously as it was in their power to do so.

As far as the Confederate flag issue... I have many, many documented relatives - direct ancestors, brothers of brothers, cousins, and in-laws - who served during the War of Northern Aggression. Very few, if any, had any slaves. Did you hear that? Dozens of my ancestors who fought in The War, had no slaves. Same on my husband's side. They thought they were fighting against a tyrannical federal government just like their grandfathers had fought a tyrannical King George during the American Revolution. I won't go into all the reasons why they thought the federal government had gone amok. Suffice it to say, just as you think it has today, so they thought it had then. They took up arms for independence. They legally and democratically voted for seccession and when Abraham Lincoln refused to meet their delegates, who desired to broker peace, and he sent military  to re-enforce Fort Sumter  on our soil, we fired the first shot and the War of Northern Aggression started. I blame Lincoln for starting the War. But, we will not get into that in this post. What I wanted to say was that our ancestors, who lived and fought, were wounded and died and were taken prisoner; whose lives were forever changed and shaped by that horrible time (and it shaped the lives of Southerners until this day!) deserve to be remembered. I think we should remember how hard the black slaves had it; how hard they worked and somehow they survived. Black people today, who are descendants of black slaves, are born from survivors of that time. To realize what they survived, came through and to have it so much better today than their ancestors had - it is something to be proud of and to celebrate. I have no problem with them having monuments, streets named after, museums, history books, historical societies, etc.

But I'm just as proud of my ancestors as they are of theirs. Mine also worked hard. They didn't sit on a porch and watch their slaves works, they worked fields too. They built their own log cabins, hunted for food, pulled up stumps and cut down trees in order to plant. They lived and died a hard life and they found it just as important to fight in the War of Northern Aggression as had their grandfathers who fought for the American Revolution. Some of those Yankee and Rebel soldiers weren't worth spitting on. But many more were and did their duty as they saw fit and I'm proud of those. Why can't I be proud of them? Why can't I honor them and their sacrifices just like I would those who fought in WWI or WWII or Vietnam, etc.? Why can't my heritage be proudly represented? Currently we have the Confederate flag on a place of memorial on the state grounds of the SC Capitol. There is also a memorial to our black citizens on the same state grounds. But they are saying we should take down our Confederate flag, our Confederate memorials, our Confederate monuments, our Confederate battlegrounds? We are suppose to hang our head in shame for something we did not do and most of our ancestors did not do? I"m sorry, but that's wrong. And it won't stop with just removing it. It was put on our Capitol Building in 1961 at the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the War of Northern Aggression, when SC fired the first shot in April, 1861. It was part of our history and is a big tourist interest. I don't know why we let the NAACP bully us into taking it down from the capitol but at least they compromised by putting it in a place of honor on the Capitol grounds along with the black memorial. But that wasn't enough. Removing from the state grounds won't be enough. Removing it from cemeteries won't be enough. Removing it from the retail shelves won't be enough. The more victory they get, the more they will bully to get their way. That's just human greed and selfishness. We will never please everyone, it will never be enough. So don't start caving in to the unreasonable demands. The pendulum of power has swung way out of balance once again. Roof massacred those innocent people in their church. That was his fault and his alone. He did a despicable thing and he will pay for it legally. He was caught in less than 24 hours and his butt is toast. Justice has been done (or will be done as it goes through the courts). So there is no need to protest against "injustice". SC black people seemed to see that and be satisfied. I thought our state did a wonderful job coming together and being supportive of those who were the victims of this senseless crime. I think blacks and whites came together in sympathy for each other in a beautiful way. UNITL Governor Nikki Haley poured gasoline on a coal. She mentioned the Confederate flag and said it needed to come down. That's all it took. Suddenly, something that had reached a consensus and compromise, something that was water under the bridge, ignited. SHE did the worst thing she could have done. She gave those who, in their grief, are looking for something to blame, a catalyst. So now the flag, a memorial of honor and respect for those who fought, is to blame for racism and the massacre. It's so ludicrous and unbelievable that I would have laughed except that people are taking it so seriously and becoming violent about it. And I blame HER for giving them that catalyst, that gasoline. If she said she didn't realize what she was doing and was sorry, I would understand that she just got caught up in fervor. But the damage is done now. The pendulum of racism is no longer in balance, its swung wide and now it's white people who are suppose to be afraid, ashamed, apologetic, and throw in reparations on top of it.

This is a very sad and volatile time. But I want to put it in perspective. Here are a list of those in my family lines (direct ancestors as well as brothers and cousins and in laws) that I know of who fought for the Confederate States of American (C.S.A.).

Organizing With Magnets

We are all used to seeing magnetic strips in kitchens to hold your knives. I can tell you from experience that it's a nice feature. I found a magnetic knife block at a yard sale one time and I use it a lot. It only holds 3 knives but the magnets are so strong that I can attach my kitchen scissors to it as well. Love it. We also have seen magnets used on your refrigerator to attach notes, pictures, cartoons, etc. But now we have not only magnets but adhesive magnetic strips and magnetic paint, even magnetic chalkboard paint. I haven't been as impressed with adhesive magnetic strips. It just doesn't seem strong enough and the magnetism decreases with time. For some things it's fine. For instance, my niece drew a picture and her mother had it transferred on a magnetic strip about the size of a 4x6 photo. She's now an adult with her own child and I still have that little drawing and it still sticks to the fridge. It won't hold anything else, but it holds itself.

I looked on the internet and found some great ideas for using magnets when you organize. I tried to pick things that you might not normally think of. You can purchase magnets in many sizes and the strips at craft stores. You can also purchase products with attached magnets such as magnetic clips, hooks, organizers and they are easy to find in stores like Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes. So here goes....
