There is an old cemetery near Jonesville, SC called Flat Rock Cemetery. It was recently on the news that someone had stolen some of the Confederate Honor Crosses from the graves there. The Gault family have most of the graves in this small cemetery and they requested help from the local SCV camp (Sons of Confederate Veterans). They were able to have them re-placed and they hed a re-dedication ceremony today. Stan and I went. Stan is a member of the Spartanburg camp, the Adam Washington Ballenger Camp #68. We met some friends down there. Several local camps participated and re-enactors came from as far as Rock Hill, SC to be part of the Honor Guard.

Elijah T. and Mary Moseley Fowler must have died between 1900-1910 because they are not found in the 1910 U.S. Census. They must have died in Oklahoma but I didn't find them in FindAGrave.com nor does Oklahoma have their death records with Ancestry.com so I couldn't say when they died or where they are buried.

B) Joshua Bryan Lee (aka Josh B. Lee, Josh Lee) (DOB 1/23/1892 in Childersburg, Talladega County, AL; DOD 8/7/1967 in Norman, Cleveland County, OK) married Louise Gerlach (DOB 12/17/1896 in AL; DOD 12/6/1977 in Norman, Cleveland County, OK). They are both buried in the IOOF Cemetery (Independent Order Of Odd Fellows Cemetery), 1913 North Porter Avenue, Norman, Cleveland County, OK. They had 2 children: Mary Louise Lee who married Donald Raymond Symcox and Robert J. Lee.

Wikipedia
Born in Childersburg, Alabama, Joshua B. Lee moved with his parents to Pauls Valley, Oklahoma (which was then Indian Territory), and then to Kiowa County, near Hobart, in 1901. He attended the public schools of Hobart and Rocky, Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Baptist University at Shawnee. He was a teacher in the public schools of Rocky from 1911 to 1913 and was a coach of athletics and teacher of public speaking at the Oklahoma Baptist University, 1913–1915; he graduated from the University of Oklahoma at Norman in 1917, and received a graduate degree in political science from Columbia University in 1924, and a law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Cumberland University (Tennessee) in 1925. He was initiated into the Mu Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity in 1917.

During the First World War, Joshua Lee served overseas as a private in the One Hundred and Thirty-fifth Infantry, Thirty-fourth Division, in 1917 and 1918. From 1919 to 1934, he was head of the public speaking department of the University of Oklahoma, and was also an author and lecturer. "HOW TO HOLD AN AUDIENCE WITHOUT A ROPE" and "THE BATTLE OF COGNAC" were his most noted titles. "THE BATTLE OF COGNAC" was first published in October 1919 by "Harlow Publishing Corporation". It was republished as a hard cover in 1948 by Harlow Publishing Corporation with three more rhymes included. Besides the rhymes there is enough commentary to illuminate the circumstances in which the rhymes were written. The 1948 version was ill-trimmed and the pages were not separated in twenty four instances. It is made up of soldier rhymes, with no effort to make them poems. Josh called them "the jottings of a doughboy."

One sample of his authentic jottings is this passage contributed by a man reporting for help at sick call. “Are you sick, soldier?” And the trooper says, “No sir, I ain't sick, but I feels powful unnecessary down around my mess kit.”

Illustrations for the book were contributed by Ruth Monro Augar—from sketches she did during The First World War while serving as an El Paso Herald reporter—from scenes observed on the Texas border, near Fort Bliss.

During the latter part of the war Josh Lee joined the entertainment troop and soon became a favorite of battle-sick doughboys. He knew how they felt because he had been there, slogging through the same mud.

By 1948 Josh Lee owned and operated a ranch in western Oklahoma and a farm near Norman. His reputation in the neighborhood was that of just an all around good guy. He had a pond on his farm near Norman.

Left in his personal papers were pictures of himself and FDR, about 100 copies of his “Cognac” book with the covers intact, and the pages still unopened. There were several recordings of material gleaned from his course in public speaking. There was also a picture of a painting of an early MacArthur, as well as pictures of himself at various functions.

There were three duffel bags full of correspondence and clippings of his public career that made the news. He and Will Rogers were close friends at one time. “Josh Lee never met a man he didn't like either,” said Leroy Bridges, the Director of Outreach Political Communication Center, Department of Communication, at the University of Oklahoma. He is a treasure trove of information on the subject of Josh Lee and the times and people of the times.

From 1919 to 1934, Josh Lee was head of the public speaking department of the University of Oklahoma, and was also an author and lecturer; he owned and operated a ranch in western Oklahoma and a farm near Norman.

He was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth Congress (January 3, 1935-January 3, 1937) and was not a candidate for renomination in 1936; he was then elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from January 3, 1937, to January 3, 1943. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1942, and was a member of the Civil Aeronautics Board from 1943 to 1955. He returned to Norman and practiced law; he died there in 1967 and was interred in the I. O. O. F. Cemetery.

LEE, JOSHUA BRYAN (1892-1967)

Once called "a city feller with a hick name,""Josh" Lee, who served Oklahoma as both a senator and a representative in Congress, was born in Childersburg, Talladega County, Alabama, on January 23, 1892, the son of Dr. Thomas Jefferson and Josie Fowler Lee. He was christened Joshua but later acquired the middle name of Bryan after William Jennings Bryan. The family moved toPauls Valley, Indian Territory, when he was three and later to near Hobart in 1901. Shortly after statehood they relocated to near Rocky. The younger Lee attended public schools in the last two towns.

He attended Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) and the University of Oklahoma (OU), receiving a bachelor's degree from the latter in 1917. He supported himself as a teacher in the public schools of Rocky (1911-13) and a coach of athletics and teacher of public speaking at OBU (1913-15). In 1916 he won the national collegiate oratorical championship. In 1924 he received a master's degree in political science from Columbia University and in 1925 an LL.B. degree from Cumberland University of Tennessee. Lee was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1917. During World War I he served fourteen months in France as a private in the 135th Infantry, Thirty-fourth (Sandstorm) Division.

Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he went to OU, where he became head of the public speaking department. He held this position until 1934, when he first ran for the U.S. Congress. His students included Carl Albert and Mike Monroney. Lee was a widely known lecturer and speaker and the author of such books as Soldier Rhymes (1919), Public Speaking (1924), The Battle of Cognac, and Other Soldier Rhymes (Oklahoma City: Harlow Publishing Corp., 1948) and How to Hold an Audience Without a Rope(Chicago: Ziff-Davis Publishing Co., 1947). The New York Times called him a "silver-tongued, slick-haired Demosthenes from Oklahoma," and both that newspaper and Time magazine considered him Oklahoma's second-best public speaker, after Will Rogers.

Lee married Louise Gerlach of Woodward, Oklahoma, on January 17, 1923. He and his wife had two children, Robert Joshua and Mary Louise.
Near Norman he bought and operated a farm. He also owned and ran a ranch in western Oklahoma.

In 1934 the voters of Oklahoma's Fifth District elected Lee as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served only one term, from January 3, 1935, to January 3, 1937. In 1935 on the House floor, he delivered a eulogy honoring humorist Will Rogers.

In 1936 he ran against and beat incumbent Sen. Thomas P. Gore in the Democratic primary and won the senatorial contest in the general election that year. Gore was unpopular with voters for not supporting Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. Lee, on the other hand, supported the administration. He also had a strong campaign organization staffed by former students called "Rover Boys," which included Alfred P. Murrah, Luther Bohanon, and Eugene Rice Duncan.

The new senator held his seat in the upper legislative body from January 3, 1937, to January 3, 1943. He served on the following Senate standing committees: Commerce, Education and Labor, Irrigation and Reclamation, Military Affairs, and Public Lands and Surveys. He was also on the Special Conservation and Utilization of Aquatic Life Committee. While he was on Commerce, the committee considered legislation that created the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), and Lee held a seat on the subcommittee studying aviation. He gained attention in the late 1930s when he sponsored a bill to draft wealth as well as men in the event of war. In 1939 he was elected secretary of the majority caucus and became a member of the Senate Democratic steering committee. In 1940 he was a leading advocate in the Roosevelt third-term movement, and he was considered a potential vice-presidential candidate. In 1941 the president appointed him chair of the U.S. delegation to the Pan-American Highway Congress in Mexico City. Before the United States entered World War II, Lee supported preparedness and aid for the Allies. In 1942 he chaired a military affairs subcommittee that held hearings on air cargo.

The senator won the Democratic primary handily in 1942 but failed in his bid for reelection. His opponent was Ed Moore, a lifelong Democrat turned Republican who conducted a vigorous, well-financed campaign. Moore took advantage of the public's waning support for the New Deal and its concern over early losses in the war. Lee remained in Washington, D.C., through the fall to press a legislative amendment banning alcoholic beverages from army and navy bases. Beer forces moved to the Moore camp. The senator returned to Oklahoma just ten days before the November election, too late to secure a victory.

On February 8, 1943, the president appointed Lee to an unexpired term on the CAB. He was later appointed for two full terms. In this capacity he urged development of municipal aviation operations, participated in international air conferences, and negotiated air agreements with other countries. In 1949 he served as the board's chair. He retired on December 31, 1955.

Upon retirement, Lee returned to Oklahoma. He lived at and ran his farm near Norman, where he carried out his ideas on conservation. He also practiced law with the Oklahoma City firm of Bohanon, Barefoot and Lee. Josh Lee died in Norman on August 10, 1967. He was interred in the IOOF Cemetery there.

Biographical Sketch of the Creator of the Collection
Oklahoma University
Josh Lee was born in 1892 in Childersburg, Alabama, and moved with his family to southern Oklahoma when he was three years old. He was educated in Baptist schools and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1917, where as a senior he won the National Oratorical Council prize. The next autumn, Lee joined the University of Oklahoma as an instructor in public speaking. He received the MA degree in political science from Columbia University in 1925, and an LLB degree from Cumberland Law School in Tennessee in 1926.

A Democrat, Lee represented Oklahoma's Fifth District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1935-1937. In 1936, he was elected to the U.S. Senate. As a congressman, Lee served on the Civil Service, Education, Pensions, and World War Veterans' Legislation Committees. As a senator, he served on the Commerce, Education and Labor, Irrigation and Reclamation, Military Affairs, and Public Lands and Surveys Committees.

Lee was a strong supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. Surprisingly in 1942, Lee was defeated in his Senate reelection bid by Edward H. Moore, an anti-New Deal Democrat, who had been nominated by the Republican Party. Lee had aroused the ire of beer forces with a proposed rider to a bill lowering the draft to prevent the sales of intoxicating liquor in the area of army camps. The beer forces campaigned for Moore, but the "drys" did not march for Lee. In 1943, President Roosevelt appointed Lee to an unexpired term on the Civil Aeronautics Board. He later served two additional six-year terms. In 1955, Lee returned to Norman, Oklahoma, to practice law. He died in Norman on August 10, 1967.

The collection is organized into five series: speaking engagements and speeches; official correspondence; personal correspondence; resource material; and scrapbooks.

The speaking engagements and speeches series covers the years 1916-1966 and includes undated speeches as well. Because the audiences of the speaking engagements were so diverse-from high school commencement exercises to the chambers of Congress-the topics of the speeches are varied.
Aviation is the focus of the official correspondence series (1925-1967). Topics include aeronautical law, safety standards, and employment. This series also has information on politics and job appointments. The personal correspondence series (1914-1972) includes materials relating to Josh Lee's business and family life. There is also correspondence with political figures, such as Carl Albert and Claude Pepper.

The resource material series (1911-1967) contains magazine articles written by or about Lee; Civil Aeronautics Board cases and additional correspondence; biographical information; campaign material; clippings; newsletters; pamphlets; programs; and miscellaneous items. The scrapbook series (1933-1965) has correspondence, information on Lee's Senate years, his defeat for reelection to the Senate in 1942, the Civil Aeronautics Board, speaking engagements, clippings, magazine articles, and other miscellaneous material. Some of the scrapbooks include clippings from the Congressional Record.

Some of the family went to see our niece, Jenny, and her family up in Illinois back last fall. They went to a Pumpkin Patch one day and took the children. They had a good time. Here is my digital scrapbook page of that day.

Recycling Wine Corks

If you enjoy wine, then you have seen wine corks. There is evidently an argument for traditionalists who prefer real cork above the new style of wine corks, recycled wine corks. Either way, you can accumulate a lot of corks and there should be a way to repurpose the wine corks. I found some ideas by doing a Google image search. It always astounds me how crafty and smart people are. I saw corks used as wall coverings and backsplashes, bulletin boards, floor coverings, etc. And you don't have to use the full cylinder, but you can cut them in half lengthwise or cut into disks. Here are a few photos I found to give you some ideas.

Corks float so they would be good for boat keys.

Our niece, Jenny, sent this funny picture of her son, Brett, drinking his chocolate milk through his eyeglasses straw. The look on his face is so impish. I made this digital scrapbook page using this funny pictures. I wanted it to be impish and fun and I think I succeeded.

Boyd was a farm laborer in the 1900 Census. He was an "engineer in cotton mill" in the 1910 census. He was a Grocery clerk for Monarch Mills, Lockhart, Union County, SC according to his WWI draft registration card completed on 9/12/1918. He was a "stationary engineer in cotton mill" in 1920 census. A stationary engineer meant he maintained the steam engine that ran the mill. He was "police at cotton mill" in Buffalo, Union County, SC in the 1930 census. He and Ida lived for a time in the apartment that is attached to the county jail. Ida cooked for the prisoners. But when Boyd died, they were living at 111 Walker St, Union, SC in the Monarch Mill village. Bernice was living with them and Bernice and Boyd worked at Monarch Mill. He was an "engineer at the cotton mill". He was a good, kind man.

Ida was born in Rockingham, Richmond County, NC and moved with her family when she was young. They lived in Union 20 years and she moved to Spartanburg, SC in 1945, 15 years after his death. She was of German extraction.

DOD: 7/1/1930 at 4pm
Cause of death: Pellagra
Burial: 7/2/1930 at Wesley Chapel

He died of Pellagra which is a vitamin deficiency disease most commonly caused by a chronic lack of niacin (vitamin B3) in the diet. It can be caused by decreased intake of niacin or tryptophan, and possibly by excessive intake of leucine. It may also result from alterations in protein metabolism in disorders such as carcinoid syndrome. A deficiency of the amino acid lysine can lead to a deficiency of niacin, as well. Untreated, the disease can kill within four or five years. Treatment is with nicotinamide, which has the same vitamin function as niacin and a similar chemical structure, but has lower toxicity. The frequency and amount of nicotinamide administered depends on the degree to which the condition has progressed. Symptoms of pellagra include: Delusions, Diarrhea, Inflamed mucus membranes, Mental confusion, Scaly skin sores. It is characterized by horrible skin sores, digestive and nervous system disturbances, and eventual mental deterioration. Specific psychological symptoms of pellagra: Psychosensory disturbances (impressions as being painful, annoying bright lights, odors intolerance causing nausea and vomiting, dizziness after sudden movements); Psychomotor disturbances (restlessness, tense and a desire to quarrel, increased preparedness for motor action) Emotional disturbances

Richard James Selby and Verlinda Fields

While researching the Sibley line in my husband's family I came across Richard James Selby. Richard J. Selby was born 10/26/1818 in Maryland to Richard James Sibley, Sr. and Mary Ann Gardner.

Richard J. Sibley, Sr. was born 7/15/1792 in Maryland and died 5/5/1844 in Maryland and was married to Mary Ann Gardner. Mary Ann Gardner was born 9/24/1798 in Maryland to John Gardner and Cassandra Dowden and died 2/11/1869. He went by Richard SELBY rather than his father's name of SIBLEY. This was my first obstacle. Once I decided that Richard Sibley was going by Richard Sebley I was able to follow him further.

Richard James Selby, Jr. was the eldest of 9 children. He married Verlinda Fields on 4/8/1856 in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Maryland Marriages, 1655-1850
Name: Richard Selby
Spouse: Verlinda Fields
Marriage Date: 8 Apr 1856
County: Montgomery
State: MD

It's possible he served during the War of Northern Aggression although he was 43 yrs old when he joined. He joined while the great Battle of Gettysburg was getting started. Here are the only records I found that could be him.

I have not found the Sibley family in the 1850 U.S. Census yet. I did not find Richard James Selby, Jr. in the 1860 U.S. Census.

1870 U.S. Census of District 4, Montgomery County, Maryland; Roll: M593_591; Page: 477A; Image: 515; Family History Library Film: 552090, Lines 12-16, "Richard Selby" (sic)

Arthur C. Selby, 2 yrs old (DOB 1868), M, W, At home, Born in MD

Richard J. Selby, Jr. must have died between the time his last child was born in 1877 and the 1880 U.S. Census where Verlinda is listed as "widowed"

1880 U.S. Census of Darnestown, Montgomery County, Maryland; Roll: 512; Family History Film: 1254512; Page: 392D; Enumeration District: 116; Image: 0769, Lines 14-19, "Malinda Selby"

Ida Selby, W, F, 16 yrs old (DOB 1864), Daughter, Single, At Home Born in MD, Both parents born in MD
Arthur Selby, W, M, 13 yrs old (DOB 1867), Son, Single, At Home Born in MD, Both parents born in MD

Harry Selby, W, M, 3 yrs old (DOB 1877), Son, Single, At Home Born in MD, Both parents born in MD

I did not find her again. As you can see her name was spelled "Verlinda", "Balinda" and "Malinda". She may have remarried or she died before the next U.S. Census. Or maybe the name was misspelled another way.

I have no idea where they are buried, although I'm sure they are both buried in Montgomery County, MD as they seemed to have lived all their life there.

Here are the sources for their children. It was a difficult family to follow and some records I couldn't find.

1) John R. Selby - I found nothing more on him after the 1870 U.S. Census.

2) Ida E. Selby - I found nothing more on her after the 1880 U.S. Census.

3) Arthur was living at home in the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census in Darnestown, Montgomery County, MD. In 1894-1895 he is listed alone living at 1414 1st NW in the Washington, DC City Directory and was working as a "motorman". He married Lucy B. Mullican on 9/23/1895 in Washington, DC. They are together in the 1900 U.S. Census back in Darnestown, Montgomery County, MD and he is a "lock tender". Lucy died 12/30/1906 in Washington, DC. He is listed by himself in the Washington, DC city directory in 1907 working as laundry man at an insane assylum. He then married the divorced Laura V. Ricketts Ricketts in 1909. In 1910 they are together in Potomac, Montgomery County, MD and he is a "machinist farm lotte" (sic). The marriage with Laura must not have lasted because he married Mary Cornelia Butt in 1914 in Washington, DC. I could not find them in the 1920 U.S. Census. They are living in Travilah, Montgomery County, MD in the 1930 U.S. Census and Arthur is a laborer at a golf club. In the 1940 U.S. Census they are still in Travilah and Arthur is a farmer. They remain married until his death in 1943 in Montgomery County, MD. Mary Cornelia died in 1946 and they are buried at Rockville Cemetery, Montgomery County, MD.

This is the first Valentine's Day for our newest grandniece, Brooke. Here are the digital scrapbook layouts I did of her Valentine's Day.

Here is Brooke with her mother, our niece, Jenny.

And this is the digital scrapbook page that I made for another grandniece, Savannah, with her mother, Hannah.

Valentine's Day

We had a great Valentine's Day. It so happened that this Valentine's had a full moon called a Valentine's Moon. I was out at midnight snapping some pictures of the Valentine's Moon. Then, last Friday, we had an earthquake of 4.2 magnitude. I was in bed working on my laptop when it happened and I noticed it. So I snapped a selfie just after it happened. Here are the 2 digital scrapbook pages I did, the one of the Valentine's Moon and the other of the earthquake.

The Wild Hauser Boys Are Coming!

Our niece, Jenny, and her husband, Kyle, are bringing their children for a visit in a couple of weeks. Brett is 5 now and Ryan will be 2 yrs old in June. They just had a little girl, Brooke, who is about 2 mos old. It will be the first time we've seen little Brooke in person so we can't wait for them to get here!. While we were talking about their trip on Facebook, my husband said he wanted to take the boys and do some "crazy" things and, in jest, said it might even result in "scars" (like riding in a wagon or a go cart). Jenny quipped right back and said, she wasn't worried about the boys getting scars but that they might give Great Uncle Stan some scars and she said "Just ask Kyle. He's got a scar on his ankle where Brett put a sparkler in his boot." When I read that I rolled! I laughed so hard and I knew I had to come up with a digital scrapbook page about it. Here is the result. The journaling are the actual repartee on Facebook.
