Sanford Drayton Briggs was born Abt 1818-1819 in South Carolina. I currently don't know who his parents were. Some have Malinda Briggs as his mother but she was born about 1806 and that would make her 11-13 when Sanford Drayton Briggs was born in 1818-1819. I know it's physically possible but I have found no definitive proof that she's his mother and Robert Potter Briggs (DOB 3/25/1825 in Laurens County, SC; DOD 10/19/1877 in Laurens County, SC) is his brother. They live in the area but I don't have proof they are connected to him. If you know something and have proof, please contact me at Mom25dogs@gmail.com.
Miriam Catherine Willard (aka Marion Willard, Meriam Willard, Mariam Willard) was born 9/1829 in SC to James Willard (DOB: 1790 in Union County, SC; DOD: 1843 in Union County, SC) and Winnifred Woodruff Hill (DOB: About 1798 in Union County, SC; DOD: About 1850 in Union County, SC). She married Sanford Drayton Briggs in 1843 in Union County, SC.

"As is often the case in South Carolina, late May was very warm in 1877, and to compound the fire danger, it was very dry as well. On Sunday the 3rd of June the sun rose clear and hot. Somewhat before ten o'clock the bell in the ninety foot high wooden steeple of Unionville Baptist Church began summoning the faithful to 'Sabbath School'..."
"Weekly Union Times editors Stokes told what happened next: 'About half past 12 o'clock, while four-fifths of our white inhabitants were at church, the dreaded alarm of fire was sounded upon Main Street, and by the time many could arrive upon the spot the wooden building occupied by W.R. Briggs and Company, adjoining Hill and Company's large brick building, was one sheet of flame and the boxing under the eaves of the latter building on fire the whole length, and in a quarter of an hour the whole inside of the upper story of that building was one roaring mass of flame and smoke. The wind was hard.'"

5) Mary Francis Briggs (DOB: 6/5/1851 in Union County, SC; DOD: 12/2/1910 in Union, SC) married ? . She had James M. Briggs, Wallace Simpson Briggs, Arthur Fleming Nance Briggs, Sr. (aka Flemmie Briggs), David Briggs, Luther Raymond Briggs, Johnny Briggs.
A) James M. Briggs (DOB 12/1873 in Union County, SC; DOD ? in ? ) married ? . He is in the 1880 and 1900 U.S. Census. In the 1900 U.S. census he is listed as 26 and Single. He is the Head of the Household and working in a cotton mill. Next is his mother and then a list of brothers. All are clearly marked as "Bothers". I find no other record of him.
B) Wallace Simpson Briggs (DOB 5/31/1877 in Union County, SC; DOD 5/2/1946 in Union County, SC) married Lillian Estell Stevens/Stephens (DOB 8/5/1895 in SC; DOD 5/1980 in Union County, SC). They had Wallace Rodney Briggs, William Rheet Briggs, Murray Briggs, Jack Mosley Briggs, Sr., Mary Frances Briggs married Warren Lee Nabors.
C) Arthur Flaming Nance Briggs, Sr. (DOB 2/11/1880 in Union County, SC; DOD 1/30/1969 in Rutherfordton, Ruthford County, NC) married Minnie May Hill (DOB 5/26/1880 in VA; DOD 7/8/1951 in Gaston County, NC). They had Eula Blanche Briggs married Rupert Spencer Eaves, Jr., Leah Mae Briggs married Royal Clyo Eller, Lewis Ray Briggs, Arthur Fleming Briggs, Jr.
D) David Briggs (DOB 11/1882 in Union County, SC; DOD 10/26/1917 in Columbia, Richland County, SC) married Julia ? .
E) Luther Raymond Briggs (DOB 1/27/1889 in Union County, SC; DOD 7/30/1944 in Cobb County, GA) married Cora E. Wilson (DOB 4/13/1893 in SC; DOD 11/24/1972 in Cobb County, GA). They had Mary Gladys Briggs.
F) John Briggs (DOB About 1899 in Union County, SC; DOD ? in ? ).
Mary Francis Briggs may have had these children out of wedlock as she lives with her parents and her sons are with her. When her parents die, she lives with her sons until her death. So who were their father(s)?
Her son, Arthur Fleming Briggs, Sr. lists his parents, on his death certificate, as Drayton Sanford Briggs and Mary Frances Wilburn. Sanford Drayton Briggs was his grandfather. Who did Mary Francis Briggs marry that was a Wilburn? She was a Briggs on her last census in 1910 and was buried later that year as Mary Frances Briggs. So I don't think she was married. That leaves two options:
a) Arthur Fleming Briggs, Sr.'s death certificate is wrong. Maybe the informer was confused or just didn't know or had been told wrongly. It's easy to get things confused when a death has occurred. Or sometimes the info is embarrassing and people tend to gloss over it with wrong facts.
b) Incest (father, daughter). But then why "Wilburn"?
Another son, David C. Briggs died in an automobile accident in Richland County, SC at the young age of 33 yrs old. His death certificate lists his parents as James Briggs born in SC and "Don't know". The informant was Mrs. Julia Briggs, his wife. Who is "James Briggs"? And his mother had only been dead 7 yrs, why didn't Julia Briggs know her name? That leaves these options:
a) David C. Briggs' death certificate is wrong. Maybe the informer was confused or just didn't know or had been told wrongly. It's easy to get things confused when a death has occurred. Or sometimes the info is embarrassing and people tend to gloss over it with wrong facts. Maybe she got his father's name mixed up with the older brother's name, James M. Briggs. Just a simple mix up.
b) His father was different from Arthur Fleming Briggs, Sr. and therefore the different name given. But who was he? Was he a relative or someone unrelated but with the same last name? Is it possible that his older brother James M. Briggs was named after a father named James Briggs?
I can't find a death certificate for her other sons: Wallace Simpson Briggs (who died in 1946 in SC) or Luther Raymond Briggs (who died 8/1/1944 in Atlanta, GA at 55 yrs old). and I can't find any record of John/Johnny/Johnnie Briggs after the 1900 U.S. Census. There should definitely be a death certificate for Wallace Simpson Briggs on Ancestry.com as SC Death Certificates are on there but there isn't one. I find them all day long on Ancestry.com. Why? Why didn't one get filled out and registered? I have come across this problem before but rarely.

She married Sanford Drayton Briggs in 1843 in Union County, SC.

Pg 263
